USPS and your valuable coin shipments that require signature confirmation. USPS® CV-19 Updates added

In the past 10 days, I have had two signature confirmation Priority mail packages delivered from USPS without the mail carrier asking for a signature. One was from PCGS and the other from Great Collections. As far as today's package, I was aware that the mail carrier was outside my condo door, so I opened the door just to say hello. Of note, there is a 12 cluster internal mailbox unit on the wall of the first floor hallway. I noticed my package was on the floor in front of my door. I said hello, do I need to sign for this package, and she said, "No Sir." She was very nice and said , "Here, let me get your remaining mail," since the door was open to the 12 boxes.

My question is, do you think USPS is telling its employees not to come in contact with the customers if at all possible. And perhaps she thought she doing the right/safe thing? I noticed that she signed her scanner as me when I checked online, but the one from last week was some unintelligible name. Also of note, we have two or three different carriers, not in any particular order. Has anyone else had this 'no need to sign' experience of late? It's a rarity if the mail carrier does not ask for my signature on a signature confirmation package.

One other thing, she was not wearing a mask or gloves.

I get valuable stuff delivered to my PO Box, but haven't picked up anything requiring a signature there in over a month. Not sure if they still make you sign on the touchpad. In terms of wine and other FedEx deliveries to the house, the drivers have handled the signatures, although I think they usually knock to alert us of the arrival of a package.

Yes, I seldom sign for deliveries - depends on the carrier.

At this time, my carrier is signing for the customers to avoid contact. However, he has to sign in my presence. It's just to minimize the handling of the signature device and pen.

Did you change your USPS Informed Delivery settings to waive signatures? In all likelihood, the carriers have been given permission to avoid contact. The only option I can think if then is to see if Informed Delivery provides and option to hold all packages at the PO for you to pick up in person.

One of the reasons I like having a camera on the front door. I can clearly see what the carrier has in his hands as he walks from the truck to the front door.

I have had several packages over the last two weeks...Any signatures were done by the Fedex or Postal person....I know when packages are coming, so I watch for them...I know the delivery people also, and they know me. Cheers, RickO

As some of you probably read my thread about USPS signing for packages when the receipent is supposed to,,,,,,, when I filed my complaint and asked I was told if the package didn't arrive to me the USPS person who signed or left it would be responsible for the value of the package. I bet most of them don't know that. Collecting from them would be another matter all together.

Reading this makes me glad that I'm not doing much of any buying so I don't have to worry about this issue.

This is what my carrier told me as he was standing 6' away & fiddling with his electronic gizmo.

Apparently the GPS pings when the signature is entered and it records the time/place of the delivery within 20 feet.
    Or so I've been told.

Same here, so no problems. In fact, I've got FedEx coming again tomorrow. Also our FedEx lady brings dog treats for our German Shepherd, so everybody's happy. :D

I guaranty some people are intentionally not buying in order to avoid having to sign for anything (which i understand). Another consequence of the pandemic.

    Agree.

I have a friend who throws the mail in the sun for a day before bringing it in the house. I have another friend who leaves the mail in the garage for a week before bringing it in the house.

USPS website said I “signed” for my last signature required package. NOT!

  • lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭

My carrier delivered an express mail package to my door and asked if I wanted to sign for it. He said signatures are now optional due to covid-19. I passed on signing.

Same here they sign for you in your presence so I don't have to handle the scanner.

My local postman who is very conscientious delivered a registered package from CAC Saturday. He said he wasn’t required to get signatures at this time because of the virus concern

  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,782 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wouldn't expect signatures to be required in light of what is going on right now. At this point, I am hoping they continue to even deliver mail nevermind signatures. I don't want to handle a pen that's been touched a hundred times previously anyway.

At the very least...for registered packages(as much as they charge) they should require customers to pick them up at the PO to sign for or have video capabilities for when a Postal Agent gets consent to sign for a customer.

Edit to add...still signing for packages here.

My carrier and a supervisor at the distribution center told me they can now sign for customers but it’s only supposed to be after the customer displays proper ID.

USPS delivered a good chunk of gold to our permanently-closed leasing office a few weeks back, that was great. They're just leaving it in the parcel lockers now, which good thing, because they're regularly broken into so we know the coins are as good as gone if anything was to happen.
