I don't buy coin's often. I see so many of yours at work, combined with my desire to become more knowledgable before I invest larger amounts of money has resulted in me enjoying looking but not purchasing coins.
I couldn't let this go though. I know lowballs aren't for everyone, especially considering the prices they go for, but this ticked all the boxes for me. I love imagining where these worn coins have been and what life they lived. The Columbian Exposition half is my favorite, I even have exonumia like love tokens from the exposition. When I saw there was one in the Pogue sale I had to try for it! I'm a little sad it didn't grade, but because the date is no longer visible, it didn't get holdered. To be honest, if it had been graded it would have sold for a lot more money, more than I had to spend so I should be happy it didn't because otherwise I wouldn't own the coin, which is the most important part right?

You could put the coin and the tag in a Coin World holder, although I'm not sure at the moment if the tag would fit properly. Too bad our hosts wouldn't holder it, if for no other reason than to certify the provenance.

I wonder why they wouldn't holder the coin based on it's provenance? I don't believe the PCGS brand would be lessened by just holdering and certifying the authenticity of the coin.
That the date is worn off is really not that consequential anymore other than you don't know if it was an 1892 or 1893.

They could have slabbed it with a "ND" for no date on the label where the date would normally appear.

One of the things mentioned in their reopening was that they weren't going to be able to handle special requests for a while, and this would be one of them. I would definitely engage someone and ask for guidance for when they are able to handle it. I don't know if it warrants going to the top and asking @BrettPCGS about it (oops, I think I just did by tagging him
). All you're asking for is to have the provenance certified in a tamper-evident manner. I don't see a downside for PCGS here.

They should also show the grade, denomination. Ex. Pogue, and Columbian Expo on the slab label.

A short story could be written about the travels of that coin while its owner aged over many decades.
While not a fan of low ball coins, that is a nice one.... and if you are a provenance collector as many are here, then it would be worth slabbing with that on the label. Cheers, RickO
The PCGS numbering system doesn’t include items that can’t be identified. Accommodating this coin might require far more work than you think.

Thanks everyone! I have a feeling some of you are correct, that they won't slab it because of the date, otherwise it would have been done already, but I'm happy with the coin regardless! I'll get more clarification at some point on it but I'm not worried about it. For now I'll just imagine where the coins been and what it's life was!
