The 34 is PCGS and the 56 in NGC.

The photos (especially with the original orange tint) didn't do the 34 any favors. What looked like marks on the face must just be toning.

At least MS66 on each coin. The 1934 has what I have always called phlegmy toning, and I mean that in a complimentary way! The patina on it is consistent with a coin that was in an original paper-wrapped roll for years, if not decades, and then broken out of the roll. I have seen this for quite a few 1930s and 1940s coins stored in this manner, specifically the 1939 issues. The other coin is just too clean to call less than MS66, but I see nothing to indicate a higher grade.

Good observations Tom. The 34 is very original and likely stored in the manner you suggested. In hand I think you would agree as a Washington guy that the 34 is the higher grade. Both are top notch in the luster department.

I would have thought the muted luster on the 34 due to the toning would have held it back a point.
