I think this will be about as good as it gets. There were pretty nice surfaces under all that crud. Will it straight grade? Well, that's anyone's guess. If it does, it'll be a low to middle XF-ish. You guys be the judge.

As a side note, I received many PMs asking why I would even consider this piece when there are so many nice ones out there. Well, the answer to that is I simply saw a challenge and I grabbed it. I liked the coin and I just knew that the coin could be a lot nicer looking than that and I couldn't let it end up in a melting pot or on a pinkie ring or WORSE, hanging around some chav's neck.

    What grade do you think it will get? You take great pics but there's nothing like examining the coin while raw under a good light source.

    Just curious, why submit it for grading? It's a common date circ. The value wouldn't be enhanced by a straight grade

    The grade is less important than the guarantee of authenticity from the grading service. This series is extremely heavily counterfeited. Being slabbed will enhance the value by at least the cost of getting it slabbed. Also, this looks like several PCGS/NGC MS-61 and MS-62 Indian $2.5 coins that I have so a low mint state grade wouldn't surprise me. At a minimum it looks like a nice AU-58.

    disagree on 2 counts: I would be really disappointed if that got an AU-58 or a 61. And any dealer would pay the same for that coin, in or out of a slab. Maybe you'd get a little more on BST or eBay, but I doubt you would get $40 or $50 more to cover the cost of slabbing.

    Raw is dead for me.
    I wouldn't buy a AGE straight from the mint for fear of it being damaged in some way.
    Anything from anywhere else could be counterfeit or cleaned.

    Not to my eyes. The lighting is making a few VERY light lines show, but in hand, they would virtually disappear I would guess.

    Agree. The fine scratches are typical of what can be expected on lower mint state coins. This series along with the Indian $5 gold coins are the only US coins that don't have a raised rim which would protect the fields from scratches when the coin is slid across a table or counter top while being counted or just picked up. That's why fine scratches are common on these coins even on mint state examples.

    So, the knowledgeable collectors concur with the "slab" and "nice coin".
    I'm not as knowledgeable as they are, but I agree it is worth slabbing, for when it comes time to sell, particularly if one has a spot or two on their submission that would otherwise go to waste or to a worse choice to slab.

    Also, not everyone cares to try to sell to dealer after dealer and would be happy selling to a collector, even if it is "only $40 more".

    WOW !!! Not bad... Personally, I would not have the guts to try removing it myself and risk damaging the coin. I would just send it out to PCGS or NGC for professional conservation.
