What happens when you break your own rules once in a while?

For me I do not buy any smaller than a quarter size as I cannot see it without a loupe.
But I have wanted this Civil War Token for years. And it tends to be pricey in a nice state of preservation.
Well........broke my own rule and very happy with it. Show us one you broke your rules for.

That is still dang nice, whatever state of preservation it might be considered!
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I heard once that rules were made to be broken
Rules? Don't need no stinkin' rules!

I didn't really need another one of these things. 1927 MS66 CAC widget.
RMR: 'Wer, wenn ich schriee, hörte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen?'
CJ: 'No one!' [Ain't no angels in the coin biz]
What happens? You get to be happy, now break out your happy feet and do a little dance!
I do not buy foreign error major coins.
That has always been a popular token and as a Rarity-1 it is available in all grades. As you mentioned it does pop up there in price in high grades, especially in red-brown. There are two things that it also has going for it: 1) It is the only Army & Navy Civil War token that has the pictorial obverse matching the reverse slogan, and 2) it is needed by those CWT collectors putting together a sub-set of USS Monitor / ironclad tokens.
That's really nice.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Very nice!

Thanks everyone. Well, since I’m admitting that I purchased such a small diameter token I mine as
we’ll post another one I broke my rules for. I never wanted to get into Trade tokens that are
‘Good For” but I’ve never seen a more decorative 5 cents. Truly beautiful die work.
Trade Token ALBERT JOHNSON PROPRIETOR N-E-T-E 5c CIGAR STORE Greenville, PA.
Wish I knew more about it.

I really like that CWT Stef.... and in great condition. Thanks for showing us...Cheers, RickO
There's not too much to add to the basic description other than 1) N-E-T-E was a cigar brand so the store name way keyed on the brand name, 2) the fancy reverse die style is mostly found on Mid-Atlantic tokens so the die sinker is probably based in that area. It is not a common style but does show up on other trade tokens, and 3) it is a hoard item, fairly easily available and usually in high grade, probably from a group of remainders.
Don't shy away from trade tokens -- but then I'm prejudiced as I am partial to coins and tokens that perform their function, the old working dogs vs. show dogs dichotomy.
Thanks @tokenpro for shedding some light on this one. I’ve never seen such a beautifully design
number. I was immediately drawn to it. Since this was hoarded then there’s no way to know how many were made then? Do you know if it was done in any other metal?
.
I am starting to warm up to “good for” tokens as I mainly collect trade tokens. But any token that has
a fantastic pictorial is very appealing to me.
.
I am beginning to understand why some collectors amassed such large collections. And, I’ve been
collecting for a good deal of time.

A wonderful way of rule breaking
sharp details down to the petals. Congrats
That's nice!
The only time I ever got caught up in auction "paddle fever". Had wanted this particular coin for a long time. Paid too much. Never regretted it.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

My own rules are never to be broken; rules made by other people, well not so much...

I have a token thats says Army Navy on it somewhere.
Not sure what is on the other side,,,, I will see if I can find it.
Great use of the design palette, IMO. War sentiment is an interesting topic in CTW. Peace Roy

It would be fun to see a set of tokens with the "Good for 5 Cents in Trade" die. I agree with Stef that this is artistic and fun.
I did a quick Google search for "Good for 5 Cents in Trade" which returned a lot of token types but none with that die.
