Picked up a gold Krugerrand at the coin shop today

Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’ve been buying three or four ounces a year for about 10 years, as my budget allows. There’s just something fun about stacking large chunks of gold. It also takes my mind off, well...other stuff.

I had a one oz coin on order from last week, when they were sold out, and they called today to say it was ready to be picked up. I showed up about 1pm, and the place was dead. I almost felt I was the first customer of the day. Usually there are lots of people selling collections, gold/silver jewelry, you name it. Very strange. Anyway, all went well.

Once I got home, I saw that WA Governor Jay Inslee had shut down non-essential businesses in Washington. Glad I picked it up today!

Wait....maybe gold is ‘essential’? 😁

Strange times. Please stay safe everyone.

If you feel it's worth the risk, do it.
I hope you wore disposable gloves into the store. You said a mouthful "strange times" indeed.

Saw a woman walk into the LCS I was at last week and buy 9 krugerands with a large stack of cash ($1610/each).

Another couple walked out with a tray and more of ASE 20 coin capsules.

The store said that while they were well-stocked and had been actively preparing for possible run, they were expecting to run out with a day or two.

It was a prearranged deal, she was just picking up. Most of the benjamins were still bank-wrapped bundles.

There are a few guys I play craps with, at a local casino, that regularly come in with that amount, or more, in cash on them.
It boggles my mind (they seldom leave with anything close to the same amount.......though, a few times, one of them did cash out $30k+....I threatened to "roll him" as soon as he got outside, else he needed to hire me as his bodyguard  )

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I was in Bellevue Rare Coin once, about 5 years go, and a younger couple (21-ish) walked in.

The woman pulls 20 loose Gold Eagles from her coat pocket, and places them on the counter.

Woman: 'Do you buy coins like this?'

The young BRC employee counted them out, looked them over closely, and said 'Sure. The boss is currently out for lunch. Can you come back in 45 min? I can't write a check that large until he returns.'

Woman: 'Sure, we'll go have lunch too, and come back. Can I just leave these here, for now, for safekeeping?'

BRC employee, looking a bit alarmed: 'Ahhhhh...no....ahhh....please take them with you'.

Alarm bells were going off in my head. Maybe I'm too judgmental. I always wondered how that all worked out. I wasn't there when they returned.

Maybe it’s just me, but sadly I’d assume they were hot.
