Please conserve bandwidth

Please conserve bandwidth. A lot of people are dependent upon it these days. Log off the internet when you are not using it. I know that I have a bad habit of just leaving myself connected while writing stories in case I need to look something up, or watch a cat video, or do other important stuff that distracts me from writing. I also leave the connection on while I go eat lunch. I'll bet you do too. . .

Internet traffic nationally has been growing at a compound rate of 30% per week, and in some areas (think NYC) it's much worse. FYI.

I thought this thread was going to tell us all to get off the forum. LOL.

Sounds like we need to upgrade our Internet bandwith since some want universay rights to free Internet. Might as well stuff that into the 3rd Bail Out 1.4 Trillion Dollar bill for the People!

We used to say this back in the 1980s, when the forum was rec.collecting.coins!
It was done by making fewer, shorter posts, and not quoting prior posts too excessively.

Could still be true today - even with the larger "pipe" (greater bandwidth),
there is still a "Murphy's Law" of computer hardware, which says that any capacity will eventually be filled.
These days capacity is more likely consumed by streaming videos, and live streams like twitch.tv and probably a few camgirls.

I am on for a while in the morning... then usually off most of the day... especially when working. I do check in from time to time if I am at home....probably more often for a while under current conditions. I do not stream movies or videos though. Just check news or a couple of forums. Cheers, RickO

Up here in gods country most of my countrymen don't have the internet. Hell most of my neighbors choose to not even have electricity. Haven't noticed any changes in internet speeds. Business as usual so to speak. Semper Fi!

I remember surfing rec.collecting.coins! (I was 10 years old or so). I can't remember if image files even worked there. If they did, you had to wait a LONG time to see one.

Given the impending shortage I'm filling my bathtub with bandwidth and I recommend everyone else do the same!

Turning off your machine or internet connection doesn't do anything, especially if you have broadband service.

What actually will happen - it's happening in Europe now - is the streaming video services will limit bandwidth. They'll send you a 480p stream not 1080p. And it's not so much that the backbone or last mile can't handle it, it's their upstream connection to their tier 1 ISP.

Nothing else you do as an individual puts a strain on the network.

We have a dedicated portal to WebEx for corporate meetings and Friday I was monitoring it from my desktop. While I saw packets being lost, it was mostly on the handoff from Roadrunner to WebEx... and the hops past that didn't have any problems. What that means is that poor router was so swamped it was dropping "ping" (ICMP) packets as low priority - and that's exactly how it's supposed to react. The meetings never suffered. We have been asked to turn off webcams as that is a 3x load.

I hope it doesn't sound wrong for me to say so and that nobody thinks I'm a bad person, but I'm not about to change my habits with the internet because of this.

I have had my fill of all the "panic hoarding" which has driven even the best managed and largest Grocery chains in NEOhio to have sporadically stocked shelves. I'll be the guy who makes a trip to the store every few days to see if I can find Purina Puppy Chow!!! why in the Hell would there be a shortage of that?? now some people expect me to get off the internet so someone else can get on?? that's ludicrous.

"Be kind! Log Off!" Yeah, I know it doesn't rhyme.......don't make me laugh!!! :p

I have noticed lots of things not loading lately while reading my news sights. Mainly pic's and vids. I think this is what is going on here...saving bandwidth. All I can figure is it is demand related.

I appreciate the intent of this post, though as some have pointed out, the net can probably handle the traffic, so I don't think we're hurting things by being on this site or leaving our PCs on.

That said, as regards the response above from MS70...do think this through sir. Many of us are now working from home. Churches are now meeting online. Many seniors are isolated and online is the only way to be in contact with family. This is not akin to panic hoarding, these are essential functions. It's a matter of following CDC guidelines in a time of crisis to prevent our healthcare systems from being overwhelmed and in the final analysis a matter of saving lives. So if it were to come down to each of us having to make changes in our internet usage for reasons like that...well I hope you will take time to think about it a little more.

Anyway, this is way off the topic of coins, but I will let the moderators decide if this thread should remain.

One final thought: the last time I saw Peter Paul and Mary on a PBS special it seemed like the width of each member of that band had increased exponentially. So I'm thinking about a 300% increase in total bandwidth there. Think about that.
