My Peace Dollar Set - It's...... kinda UGLY.

I built this set little by little a few years back. Some were original to my father's collection, and others were purchased raw and/or graded on eBay. The graded ones were cracked and placed into a Dansco album along with all the others. The set looks pretty decent in the album, but my individual photos show a lot of them to be just plain bland and ugly. I also discovered, upon photographing each coin, that some had been cleaned (1923-D & 1926). Some of these were purchased when I first started collecting, and I just wasn't paying attention or couldn't tell. I can spot 'em easy now, but this wasn't the case a few years ago. However, I really like the look of the 1926. I will probably exchange some of these with nice, circulation cameo specimens like the 1921 or 1934.

So, here they are. I hope you enjoy seeing them, even if they are...... kinda ugly.

Nice. I’ve used my granddad’s coins as seeds/starters for many series’s I’m working on in various conditions based on the conditions of those starters.

Your set looks great. I just bought a book and was thinking of doing the same thing. It might be hard cracking some of the better dates to put in the book. I have mostly collected certified coins.

These are the ones that were graded...... (1927 was also graded, but no slab pic. It was an NGC MS61)

I like it. There's something cool about seeing an actual album that you miss when everything is slabbed. The financial realities preclude it, but I've often thought it would be fun to see a nice gem or near-gem set in an album.

You do not have any UGLY coins in your set but a few would be better described as having great character. I completed my Peace Dollar set about 60 years ago, and I keep intact to this day while building a high grade 66 or better set as resources permit. I thought my 1928 was very nice........but PCGS said it was cleaned. But I just don't remember cleaning that one. It was a gift from my Uncle (coin mentor) and he may have cleaned it. But only the obverse????

I had a couple of my Peace Dollars graded, and they both came back as cleaned. I couldn't tell . What do I look for to tell if it's been cleaned or dipped?

Glad I’m not alone, as one who likes his Peace $s in the raw. That’s how 98% get to me. And it’s why about 99% stay raw. ( cleaning and dipping suck). But look at the bright side. You can see it now. Love stacking peace dollars. Assembling them in albums is joy.

Wow. Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate your comments. Putting a set together for an album is really a satisfying endeavor. @Onastone - The evidence for cleaning on the two I mentioned is most evident on the reverse. You can see fine hairlines throughout, and they present as very flat- no hint of luster whatsoever. Over time, as I have bought many silver dollars, both Peace and Morgan, I can just tell now. I purchase 99% of the coins for my collection via online venues. Since the photo quality of coins being offered online can vary considerably, this provides a way to hone the skill of spotting cleaned vs. original coins in a variety of lighting conditions, angles, etc. It just takes time.

Do you own a shop? I have tried buying raw on Ebay and have struck out on problem free pieces. I do want to fill my new album. I am looking for uncirculated examples.

Great set, not ugly at all! There’s definitely something more pleasing about albums compared to slabs. And you put in a lot of effort photographing the coins individually. I like the set and the photography.

It's a fine looking set. My brother in law did the same thing as he started with pieces from his mother and completed the set with similar looking pieces.

ANY filled Dansco is an accomplishment. A filled Dansco of peace dollars is a big accomplishment. You did really well and your coins all look good to me 👍🏻
I have empty Danscos for early commemoratives, Franklins, and mercury dimes just sitting around that I wanna fill with sliders. One day.......

If everyone was enjoying a set like that and assembling more similar ones, there would be NO whining about gradeflation, prices, weak market....etc.

It's a damn wholesome collection of coins in an album YOU have.

You should start a set of IHC, SLQ, Buffnix, etc.

And do it just like that.

Nice original set you have. Finished mine a couple years ago. '27 S and '28 S are usually hacked up like mine are. My '21 is cleaned because I cleaned it. '34- S was AU 53 and '28 was AU 58 both PCGS. All are AU coins.

I started a Peace Dollar set, from circulation, in the early 1960's. I found all except the 1928-P and a few of the mint marked dates from 1925,1926 and 1927. Several decades ago I sold the set to my then back door neighbor. He purchased the missing dates. He is 96 now. I hope to be able to buy it back some day.

Thanks for posting your set, I think the coins look nice and especially the 1921 and the 1934 issues. I've also bought plenty of coins on eBay and later realized that some them were in less than ideal condition. With your Peace dollars that education didn't cost you and arm and a leg, and in any case I think the coins present well. I may have to start a similar project myself!
