Just at a small mini market. The girl there said a lot of the customers are refusing to accept their coins back in change.

I personally have gone to 100% non-cash for now.
I just picked up $1k for walking around money.
@1Mike1....Wow... I think I will hang out at the supermarket and anyone that refuses their change, I will jump in and accept it....Sounds reasonable to me....waste not, want not. Cheers, RickO
I could see change donation containers at cashier stations.
Donations go to charities that will help those harmed by the virus.
I suspect everyone on this forum would feel a little better if they donated some change to stay safe.

This is no joke ... here people don't want any change back at all and others are spraying their change back with Lysol before touching it. It's truly unbelievable.

I'm doing that too. Never have used plastic before.........BUT......I did take out 1k in cash for walking around money. I'm lucky. Also, my heart breaks for those who don't have backup cash. My oldest boy told me about the check out lines at Costco last Saturday. Ladies insert their credit card. It doesn't go through. They are embarrassed. They cry. Their kids cry. Hey,....I grew up money poor. Dirt poor. But we lived on the ranch. Living off the land. Life was good. We knew how to get by. Not so with the people today. Around here, people are going in debt buying food, milk for the kids. Keeps me awake at night. The girls at work are nervous. Worst part...... CAN'T EVEN GIVE THEM A HUG AND KISS anymore. The 6' rule. Strange times.

All the panic is making things worse but we'll never know for sure. If everything was left as is and few were affected that would have been great. Now with everything shut down few should be affected and "they" will claim it was necessary to ruin the economy to keep the number of sick people down. Imagine living in a "free" country and being told to close your store. Oh wait, That's what's going on. So far, one member here knows someone in serious condition.

A friend owns a music school with 500 students, as of tomorrow he's closed. He has to lay off 3 family members including his wife.
They shut down the only ATM here which gives out 5s
Things ARE changing! For the better around here. Picked up 5 little Hydrants for the weekend. Little, 4 year old Joey just came running up to the house. Out of breath! Papa! Papa! Go see! THE AMINIALS! Well, there's a heard of sheep moving through the place up into the hills to graze. AMNINALS! The kids love it. Think I'll take a pot of coffee out to the BASQUE boys. It's cold and rainy around here today. Corona is a beautiful place. Snow CAPPED hills and mountains all around. The grass is green. The lake is blue. The clouds are floating by. The kids are happy. So am I. Life is pretty damn good.

My wife and I are very blessed to have saved wisely for a rainy day. I have preached to her that we need to be prepared at all times. I have ample supplies (long before this), cash stash and spendable gold coins of no numismatic value except melt. I feel for the families who live paycheck to paycheck that haven’t squandered their paychecks on $1000 phones, 65” TV’s, Houses they can barely afford and vehicles at $800 a month. No I feel for the family of 5 with hard working parents eking out a living. We just took her brother to the supermarket and purchased a months worth of food for him and his wheel chair bound son. I will pay it forward as much and as long as I can. Even a little helps and someone you know could use a little help.

Insider - A woman I know is in the ICU and her husband has been quarantined. I will start working from home on Monday. Do not like the idea at all, but it seems like the logical thing to do at the moment.
The fact that so many people are voluntarily following these rules says a lot about this world. When things get serious, people actually do the right thing. Or at least what they think is right. I'm impressed.

Had trouble with an ATM today until I took off my glove....then it worked fine. I really didn't want to touch that screen.

e-tip gloves help for this. (Designed to let you work a touch screen with gloves on). You are wise to want to avoid that touchscreen. Those things might well be one of the most dangerous items you deal with these days.
They just announced a city 10 miles from me has a big outbreak.
These things are in half the convenience stores around here.
I've started to see quarters in a lot of them recently.
My Saint Set
I am on a volunteer chain saw team, and we travel a lot from Texas to Florida, Alabama, within Texas, etc. following Hurricanes and Tornadoes to get trees off houses, etc. I always carry a good amount of cash, including $1's and $5's and a roll of quarters, as often times in the places we go, there is either no power, and everything is back to paper and pencils at checkout, or even if the power is on, the point to point sale functions are down, so no credit cards, Apple Pay, etc.
I can't even think what it would be like if this Corona thing lasts til hurricane season. For example, when Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area a few years ago, with massive flooding, there were 15,000 evacuees in the Brown Convention Center, 5000 each in 3 massive halls, cots were shoulder to shoulder, and "staff" were upstairs in large pods. We had about 100, in one room, men and women, crammed together.
All i have to say is, I am glad I live in middle of country instead of on any coast.

Are you aware as to how those things work? They are purchased from the charity for a flat fee. All else received is proprietor profit.

If ATM workers are not "essential" in those areas where we're under lockdown, and if this crisis goes on for several months, we could see an abrupt end to physical money of all forms.

We have a friend in Florida who went to the bank for cash and there was a physical shortage of currency. As for people not accepting coins back in change, I guess the currency could be just as contaminated. Never dreamed I'd be contemplating washing my money.

Currency is far far worse as a vector for disease than coin. Indeed, silver is even anti-microbial and will kill some of the germs on that ratty one dollar bill it touches.
If we survive the pestilence, we will resume our war on something else.

I stopped using cash a couple of years ago. The change I received before then was always a nuisance--I have a big jar of change at home. However, I did get currency last Friday, just in case.

whatever you see happening now is only an illusion that will fade quickly once this passes from the Nation's memory which is, sadly, very short. at this time next year it will be as though it never took place, and unless I am woefully wrong we will have learned nothing from it. the fact that the general population is so alarmed by it and our leadership so inadequately prepared to react to it should speak volumes.
