Hi! New guy here and I feel like a thief in the night!

First off, hello, new guy around here.
I’ve been collecting for quite awhile but I’ve been out of “the scene” for the last several years. Now, I’m back with a vengeance. I previously lurked over at the NGC forums many years ago, and nothing bad to say about NGC, AT ALL, but I’ve gravitated more to PCGS as of late.
I recently joined up and just sent my first PCGS sub of 5 cracked NGC and old ANACS early commems.
Early commems are my thing and at one point almost completed a type set. I will however snag ANY type of half that is: uncirculated AND silver, that I like.

Now for the thief part! (I know, catchy title)
I snagged this off fleabay last night for what I think was almost criminal.

Welcome to the forum. If no one else will point it out, I will. The reason that coin was a "rip" is that it has been stripped of any mint luster from over dipping. It's flat white and dull. Most white commems have been dipped at some point, and if not overdone, can look really good. Nothing can be done to yours to restore that luster. Most of the posters to this thread know this, but don't want to discourage you. I don't want to discourage you either, but want you to make an informed decision in the future.

I was thinking the same about it being washed out, but thought it might just be a bad over exposed photo.

I see nothing on the slabs label that would indicate the encapsulated coin is an outstanding lustrous coin or a flat white dull coin. I see a technical grade that MIGHT include eye appeal. All MS66 coins are not alike.

Do you have the coin in hand? Probably not since you just won it last night. One of the cardinal rules of this group is you never publicly brag about getting a killer deal on a coin before you actually have it in your possession. Perhaps the owner or seller might read what you wrote and change their mind about shipping it. It has happened many times in the past.

Oh I’m well aware of this. Remember as the buyer I’m privy to shipping info everyone isn’t. That info at the point of posting indicated the coin had already been received by usps and had left it’s origin city. Been around the block my man!

Know what you’re saying too and I appreciate sincerely you’re education, while most likely non-applicable in this situation. I have bought from this seller before and their pics have never done justice to the luster of the coins I received.
I don’t look for bleached out uggos.

Absolutely true each coin is different and there is a chance this one is different. NO DOUBT. However, I snagged this coin under blue sheet and as such the bottom line is I could BIN it in a minute for 180-200 on eBay and most likely dump it within a week. Thus, near zero risk of loss to me other than some time.

    No. Who was he/she?
If it helps, and I doubt it because it was like 15 years ago, I used to be known as ROBERTB on the NGC forums. I remember TomB from back then and I see he’s active here still. He always took great pics and I recall he liked coins with natural skin. 😊

    Welcome!

The Texas commems are nice coins.

Good luck with your purchase and I hope those over-exposed images are not hiding an over-dipped, over-graded coin. Based on the images, I understand why it nobody bid it higher. Hopefully you are a winner with this one.

I wouldn’t call it a “killer deal”. I would have expected the coin to sell for about $180. Perhaps a “good deal”, instead? 😉

I've never seen a pcgs 66 commem that was stripped of all luster as you suggest. I think you are going to discover you are quite wrong if the OP posts new photos.

I don't understand why you would even post such a criticism of the OP and our host when you haven't even seen the coin.

If that coin does arrive with full luster, then stand back!

I have no idea how big a deal it was/wasn't but if it looks good in hand then it is a great coin to own.

    I like the Texas commems.
FWIW those pictures look like scans, and scans never show luster. Let us know how it looks once you receive it.

So she arrived and I’d say on a hypothetical 10 point luster scale where 1 is bleached out flat as hell and 10 is lustrous to the point of a glowing aura I’d give it a 8. It’s pretty much exactly what I was expecting.

I’ve tried repeatedly to photograph it correctly and I just cannot get it. I’m nowhere close to properly set up for coin imaging. I’ll be putting a batch together in the next few weeks to get TV’ed and it’ll be in there. I’m a big fan of the images PCGS does and for what it’d cost me to assemble a photographic ensemble and the room it’d take up, which I absolutely don’t have, it’s just easier for me.

I don't think it' a rule but more like unwritten sage advice. If the seller doesn't find out first, some snitch here might tell them. The seller may realize that you got a great bargain, but usually it involves some sort of VAM or variety that's worth a fair amount of money and the seller had no clue as to what he really had.
