Young Cashiers :D

So first thing this morning I ran out for dog food as I forgot to stockpile for the furry family friends.
I ventured to a smaller local pet shop as there's no crowd size issues.
Once at the register I spot a small stack of Ike Dollars piled up on a counter behind the cashier.
Me: What are you doing with those?
Her: Oh those things they must be there since the weekend.
Me: Could I have those?
Her: What do you want those for?
Me: I bury them in my backyard for my kid to find with his metal detector.
Her: Oh sure you can have them.
Me: How many are there? (Digging a second time in my wallet)
Her: There's 7. (As she hands them to me)
Me: Great thank you. (Handing her a $10 Bill)
Her: What's this for?
Me: I want to buy them.
Her: Really what do you want to pay for them?
Me: A dollar each.
Her: Really what are they worth?
Me: A dollar each.
Her: Wow I normally just throw them away. (Mind blown facial expression)
Me: They are dollars.
Her: Really? (Mind blown expression frozen on face)
Me: Showing where it's says dollar on coin and mentioning President Eisenhower.
Her: Who?
Me: Does the owner know you throw these away?
Her: No but my assistant manager does too.
Me: How old is he?
Her: Oh he's old maybe like 26 or 27?
Me: Thanks again and have a great day. (I just smile and bite my tongue)
Her: Same to you.

Yes, it's not the same world anymore. I've had a kid at the takeout window go gaga over being paid in Presidential Dollars, saying "wow, I collect those". He bought 5 extras out of the roll that I was using.
I'm a little more than concerned about what to do with my bags of clad Kennedys.
I knew it would happen.
@Broadstruck ....Wow... I am sure that is a true story, coming from you. If it were a new member or one of our forum jokesters, I would be laughing....but from you... Just shocked amazement. Cheers, RickO
Seriously? Who doesn't even take a second to look at an unknown object to see what it is?
You should have asked if he had any quarters with the old lady on them.
Collector, occasional seller
It takes all kinds to make a world I guess
HAPPY COLLECTING
In had to share while it was still fresh on my mind
Although a minimum of 3 feet away this whole experience actually gave me the symptoms of a mild headache
Some people just don't have a clue. I find it befuddling that customers and employees alike are amazed that I can count back change to customers. I also like referring to the bills a "fin", "saw buck", "double saw buck" and "C" note.
And are totally blown away when I show my 1938 "penny" from the UK.

It seems to be two extremes. Either people think common buy rarely circulated coins are valuable, or they think they are worthless.
If they are throwing the Ike’s away, why in the Hecuba are they taking them in payment????????
That crossed my mind too, but guess someone working the weekend knew it was legal tender. It's a small store in a strip center that doesn't ever have more that one other customer in it. They can't afford to toss out any dollar they take in.
It's called the Peter Principle, and it looks like that cashier has maxed out her employment opportunities. I don't think stupidity is contagious. However, you were only 3 feet away, so get a checkup (just to be on the safe side).

This is the best line of the dialogue: "Oh he's old maybe like 26 or 27?" LOL!!
Heck, I've got underwear older than that.
Funny story! And to counteract that, I've run into more than my share of OK Boomers (I'm a boomer too) that swear that their bicentennial Ikes, halves and quarters must be worth a fortune because they've kept them in a jar all these years. 40+ years, They gotta be worth something! I've had to tell them mostly face value, then out come the scowls...

At our recent club show the club Prez had a small hoard of bicentennial Ikes that we gave out to the kids who came in. I'd ask the youngun if they knew what they were and if they did know I gave them a second one just for knowing.
Try not to think like they do Capt'N......you will loose brain cells and become like them in a vegetative state!
I recommend that Forum members stay away at least 15 feet away from Tom147. Wear an N95 mask as needed.

OMG!!! It is scary that these people are our future. People like this should not be allowed to vote. I am not sure if they should
even be allowed to Drive a vehicle!! This is insane!!
At 17 the only real money is made of plastic
knowledge is priceless in this case
When the burger and coke comes to $7.43 I sometimes give the poor kid $12.43. “Sir (love being called sir - NOT!!!) you gave me too much.”
I usually just tell them to punch it in. Eventually they hand me a $5, looking at me like I’ve worked some sort of voodoo witchcraft magic.
Plus, I would be too "thrify" to throw away a big chunk of metal like an Ike regardless of whether or not I knew what it was.
Heck, I even pick up lead wheel weights that have fallen off cars when I find them in parking lots (although I think they are tin or zinc these dsys).
I do this as well.
That’s freaking NUTS😂😂😂
In their future driver less cars will probably be the norm.
I do that too, and it scares them.
"Dude looks like a lady", but the other way around.
I follow it up by saying, when they look at me as if I were Dumbledore, "Use it or lose it."
I've had tellers ask me after handing them a Kennedy half dollar if it is one of the new dollars.
God help us all.
so did you pay for them??
Must be the owner - the really old guy.
Frank, the exchange makes me think of Sheldon explaining to Leonard why he doesn't enjoy lecturing at school --- I feel like I'm talking to a room full of Labradoodles!!
Or did he just offer to take out their trash for free.
This reminds me of the time I went to pay at a Burger joint. I can't remember if it was Hardee's or McDonald's. I had just went thru a bunch of junk coins and had some Ike's and SBA's and Kennedy's and even some Steel Cents. So I counted out the exact change and handed it to the girl behind the register. She looked at the coins and looked at me like the box of rocks she was and said I can't take this toy money. I said yes you can and you will because it is not toy money it is U.S. Coins. So we stare at each other and she says she would have to get her manager. I said OK. She came back with another box of rocks who was probably in his 20's. He said what are these? I said they are what they look like.....they are coins. He said how can this coin (SBA) be the same as this coin (IKE) and twice as much as this coin (Kennedy) pointing out the size differences. I said GEE probably the same freaking reason a $100 bill and a $1 bill are the SAME size........you have to read the numbers on them!!!!! So I showed him on each coin what the denom. was and he reluctantly took them. Even the Steel Cents even though they were the wrong color. I was going to force the issue even if I had to call the Police. My luck the Policeman or Woman would have been just as dumb. As I left I told the manager if being stupid was a disease you would be dead!
Paid for my Mango Tea at QT with 2 SBA $ and the guy said you only gave me 50 cents. Common mistakes

I love spending weird coins and bills, but something about this story really rubs me the wrong way. Police, really? Really???
Ignorance and stupidity are different. I'm world-class ignorant about a great many things. Hopefully I'm not too stupid. Apart from that, when I come away from an interaction, it's nice to think the other person has more positive feelings than negative ones. It probably isn't always true, but it's a worthy ideal to shoot for. Done right, you might have sparked enough interest to create a new collector.
Police......probably not. They just rubbed me the wrong way.
A few years ago when I did the book fair at the school my daughter attended I would salt the change with older wheat cents, IHC's etc. Also seeded the cash box with $2 bills. Several kids noticed right away, others were like ho hum. Then I had one 5th grader coming in and buying up the $2 bills, kept coming back with more money during the week and getting more $2 bills. On Friday a teacher asked him where he was getting them, ie the book fair and came and asked me to stop selling him $2 bills. Turns out the enterprising young man was selling them to his friends for up to $5 each! He was taking all the money he was getting and coming and buying more $2 bills and selling them at an obscene profit.
So there is hope for today's youth!
It is sad that the young cashier in the OP's story does not know who Eisenhower was, do they teach History in school anymore?
They do. Either the students are asleep or the teachers don't connect. Who should be blamed?
Lance.
You really need to go back and leave your contact information.
Tell them your interested in any odd money that they would be willing to get rid of.

I have been to places where they punch in $10, get the $2,57 for that and then return my 'extra' with it.
Talk with a student who is studying artificial intelligence and robotics. The math easily smokes anything I was ever exposed to.

No interest anymore. It's been replaced by co-ed texting 101.
Makes you wonder - people like that vote.
And they feel entitled to a huge pay raise.

I can't even begin to post the true stories, or my feelings. They'll hurt someone.
The OP cracked me up. DIMEMAN's too.
After two episodes, I've given up trying to spend old/odd money.
1) Tried to use a few $1 Silver Certificates to pay for parking. That resulted in my explanation, long wait and ultimately a phone call to an off-site manager who knew what they were and instructed the attendant to take them.
2) Tried to pay for a sandwich with a 1934 Series note. The teenage clerk said it wasn't really money. Again an explanation was proffered followed by the clerk summoning a manger (who was maybe 23). Another explanation was made by me which was greeted by glassy looks. Ultimately the manager asked me to pay another way.
Now, I take all of the old notes (with no collector value) to the bank.
It's fun watching them pick up each coin instead of sliding them off of the counter top and into their hand.
