TSNS Chattanooga Show Report

Arrived in good time and set up in our usual spot, Table 316. The wholesale business was excellent although retail was slow. I had a couple of nice consignment coins that went fast at the right price, including a nice 1879-CC Morgan Dollar MS64PL PCGS. I cleaned out a bunch of fungible material from the safe, even though PMs prices were spotty. High-grade gold was simply not to be found. I got a chance to see Darrell @amwldcoin 's splendid AU55 NGC 1901-S Barber quarter, and we had a nice chat.
The coronavirus was on a lot of people's minds, and I noticed some different hand-washing behavior in the men's room. They also had a guy who would sanitize and dry out the sinks on Friday, although he was gone Saturday. A nice touch. I heard some crazy ideas about the Covid-19 virus, and without going into it further, let's just say that tinfoil hats were in short supply. Even though I had some Clorox wipes and some zinc cough drops, I still managed to catch a cold and runny nose. (And I think that's all it is, but I'm taking my temperature every few hours just in case.)
I saw @bolivarshagnasty again and he showed me a gorgeous 1943 DDO Lincoln steel cent, MS67 PCGS, a Pop 1 coin I believe, and we had a nice chat. (I also checked out some of his great showcases on PCGS website later on.) I missed seeing @TurtleCat , not sure if he made it or not.
Saw a bunch of my old buds from Knoxville and environs. I actually bought very little at the show, save for a couple of key date Lincoln cents. But the highlight in terms of purchases was my being able to reacquire one of the most beautifully toned large silver coins I have ever seen. It's pretty well-known that I love beautifully toned copper and silver. (And gold, when you can find it.)
Well, this is a strictly common issue, a "1780"-SF Maria Theresa Restrike Thaler, MS66 PCGS. I sold it to my fellow dealer and friend, world paper money expert and sometime PMG grader Bryan Norris, years ago. We talked about it at the last couple of shows, and he brought it to Chattanooga and generously allowed me to buy it back. The splendid toning comprises different palettes from front to back. It's a coin I probably will never want to part with again.
The TSNS show has a great and active YN program, and I very much enjoyed meeting some of them, including Atticus who was at His 1st Coin Show!
As usual, Saturn and Neptune were overjoyed at my safe return home.
And thus endeth my tale.
Kind regards,
George

Nice report - with some great pics - thanks for sharing with the forum!
How was the precious metal biz? I was at a small show Sunday, and both silver and gold were selling if priced properly. In fact many of the guys who typically sell at reasonable prices were sold out, or had very little on hand. The 'top dollar' guys still had plenty though.
@Walkerguy21D I would say it was the same, gold was selling well at proper prices. Silver was moving more slowly except for ASEs which it seemed like everybody was searching for.
Kind regards,
George
I'll add a comment about bullion. 1 of the major bullion dealers in our area at the show has been melting all the 90% silver he buys due to low demand. He has been doin this for several months. Those 64 quarters might become a rarity 1 day!
@giorgio11 I wanted to come but my son ended up not feeling well so I thought it best to stay put.
Great report - thanks.

Did no one inform Atticus that he would get the super special deals if he smeared some mustard on that white shirt?
Great report, thanks for posting it!

Nice visiting with you George. Don't let that Thaler get away from you again. It's as gorgeous in hand as it is in the TrueView!
Thank you for doing a report George. There are a good amount of young people that are showing interest in this hobby. It's nice to see coins are still being appreciated at the entry level!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
Enjoyed your report
I don't know why someone would go to the trouble of melting bulk silver. If anything, the retail is typically a premium.
That makes no sense to me either. Sell it as is, let somebody else pay the costs of melting.
….and refining. People want their silver bars to be 999 fine.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
"Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value---zero."----Voltaire
"Everything you say should be true, but not everything true should be said."----Voltaire
All I can say about him melting 90% is he is getting a better return for 999 bars. He is a smart business man and evidently nets more from refining the 90% into bars than he can get for 90%. Wasn't that long ago he could sell all the 90% he had at shows.
Avoidance of costs is very important when markets and liquidity are poor-ish. Even if you already own a quality melting furnace, the stuff doesn't come out of the furnace at 0.999 fine.
