I totally agree!!
Agree, at least for Ned.
Loved it! Thanks for sharing. It's been years since I saw that movie and sure didn't remember the scene.
About 50% of my raw Lincoln cents and Peace dollars sets were inherited from my dad. I've completed both sets but I keep a list of the ones that my dad had collected. At some point I may sell all my coins, but not those sets.
My father has never been a coin collector.
Over the years he’s given me several Morgan dollars, usually on my birthday.
Sadly I only have one of them left.
As we both get older, the sentimental value of that coin keeps increasing.
I hope someday to be able to pass that coin onto a son of my own.
mmmhh
in my WWII collection I have a Vichy 2 franc that my great uncle carried during his 1944-1945 walking trip through Europe. A friend saw it said 'This one looks like it went through a war!"
I told him about it and he got real quite whispered "wow" and looked at the rest of the collection. That clip made me think of that.
In 1954 my father drove me to the coin shop in town. My first visit to one. I bought a blue book for my Lincolns. Still have the book and still have the Lincolns. He didn't collect but did understand the passion.

I have pocket pieces that I started carrying around each and every day for about 2 years now. They represent 4 generations of my family. I look at those just the way Owen looked at his in the video clip.
Thanks for sharing it.

I partly agree.
I have sentimental value coins but I also have coins that are quite valuable on the market.

My first post in about 5 years....been busy, lol.
This is by far my most sentimental valuable coin. Half Dime collected by my great grandmother. She kept it in a ring box in her dresser drawer. I remember her taking it out and showing it to me when I was a little fellow, of course I wanted it. She promptly told me it was promised to my Dad. My Dad made sure I ended up with it....I still have it approx. 50+ years after she first showed it to me.

I have to say it. Those two guys are total nut cases! However it speaks volumes to their talent to be able to make me forget about that for 2 minutes and become absorbed in that video and be touched by the message.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I really want to see your half dime but your link brings me to my own inventory. Maybe a link to just the picture?

It’s definitely sentimental and I know a few people who collect that way. It isn’t the purpose of my collection, though. I have a couple of coins that were my mom’s or my grandfather’s but I’m not sentimental about them. They weren’t sentimental about them.
I have a couple of coins from my Dad...and some colorized ASE's my Mom purchased for me (neither were coin collectors)...My Dad had some big silver coins from Germany that I have...he just kept them because they were nice and interesting. For me, they are family heirlooms now...Cheers, RickO
i totally agree. the guy has a great way of looking at it
The coins in the movie "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987):
Owen (Danny DeVito): See, nickel, nickel, quarter, quarter, penny.
Larry (Billy Crystal): Are any of these coins worth anything?
Owen (Danny DeVito): No

Great clip!
Yes, I can say the same for the coins my father left me and my siblings. In case you haven't heard my story.
My father gave all 5 of his kids a Morgan Silver dollar, engraved with our individual name and birth date on the coin. I decided to try to send mine in to PCGS. Hoping they would certify it. Guess what, they did!
I also requested for them to title the slab, " Dad's Dollar". They obliged on my request as well. It came back, " Genuine Graffiti ". Just like what Danny devito said to Billy crystal when asked if the coins were worth anything? No, to anyone else but to me, it's more valuable than one of the 5 rare 1913 V nickels!

I started collecting coins in 1955 when I was seven. My father was a quiet man who never really interacted with my interests. He was a non-com combat veteran from WWII and Korea. He stayed in the Army for twenty years and was “on duty” most of the time when I was a kid. I was never sure what he thought about my collecting coins or me. Then one day in 1964, without saying a word, he handed me a bank envelope. Inside that envelope were two new brilliant uncirculated Kennedy half dollars. Turns out, he stood in line at the local bank for three hours to get me those coins. I still have those coins in the original envelope. Because of his dedicated service to his country, as a retired Master Sergeant, not an Officer, he was buried at West Point Cemetery, U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. He was a good man.
Nice story, any pics of the Kennedy 's?

I bought my grandpa's collection from him (he wanted the money to pay some taxes);
his Lincoln Cents and Buffalo nickels were quite good.
It also included some coins in a change purse labelled "Dad's Coins" (my great grandpa).
Was of these was a very cool 1837 capped bust half dime in an old school holder (cellophane sleeve stapled to a card).
My dad gave me his Indian Cent collection when he was no longer adding to it (it is complete).
My dad is still doing fine at 93, so I feel lucky.
I’ve told this story many times before but when I was eight years old in late 1974 my dad bought me a GSA 1882 Carson City silver dollar from the original sale.....one for me and one for himself. I think he paid $15 apiece for them. I’ve had it all these years and will always cherish it. He still has his too. I have gotten several CC coins for him and for me, since that time. I love my dad and I love spending time with him and talking coins. He was my original influence and Mentor after all. I Would never be where I am today without him.

I still have many of the coins my Dad gave me as a jump start to my collecting. A 1837 Large cent, 1870 Newfoundland half, a couple of Morgans, a couple of Peace dollars, a lot of IHC's, and 2 or 3 "V" nickels. They will always have a special place in my heart. The only bad advise my Dad ever gave me was to "clean up" those IHC's and put them in an album. I did clean most of them, but replaced them over the years and when he passed in 2005, I completed the set (1877, and the 1908 S) in his honor/memory.

I partly agree. Clearly there are family inherited coins that mean something special to me. However, the ones that I've bought have attracted me for whatever reason.

I still have a few coins from my grandfather, and one from my childhood collection. A couple of them are in my type set.

I have two different types of coins in my collection. Most i just really like, but they all have a price commensurate with how much I like them. Some have a story, but it’s just a reminder of how I got them.
Then there are a few sentimental coins, and I can tell you the story of how I got them and why they’re special. Those coins will never have a price, and will never be for sale.
