A short ANA Atlanta show report

tommy44tommy44 Posts: 2,347 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was there for a few hours Saturday. The crowd was fairly heavy but had one dealer tell me they weren't buying anything and several others said it was a good show for them. There were several dealers set up that also have tables at the monthly Atlanta Dealers show at the Marietta Conference Center and there were also several other Georgia dealers present.

Saturday was also the first day of the two day Atlanta Travel and Adventure Show at the same venue. It was jam packed with a almost overflow crowd that I'm sure contributed to some of the action at the coin show.

I didn't go with the intention to buy anything but if you did I'm 99% sure you would be able to spend your money. I observed one dealer selling someone raw Lincolns for 5 to 25 cents each and others offering 5 figure rarities for sale. Saw one table that had a 4 inch deep Allstate case nearly full of well circulated large cents for (I think) $15 each, another had a full case of GSA dollars and there were plenty of bullion buyers and sellers with tables. A few of the big dealers were packing up or had already left but I would say that most were still manning their tables. Jack Beymer and his wife had a corner table packed with inventory, that guy is like the energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going. Heck I remember his Coin World ads in the 1960s.

I brought two coins to sell, well actually one to sell and the other maybe. The first was a small gold klippe, actually a medal not a coin depicting the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John the Baptist. I sold it for my asking price to James Beach. I bought several German show talers and double talers from his father in the 70s when I was interested in 1500 - 1750 coinage with religious themes.

The second was a lightly wiped AU 1903-O $10 that I purchased in a Stack's auction in 1989. I dug it out of the bank when gold approached $1700 last week and thought it was time to let it go since it was the last of my raw US gold that I hadn't had slabbed. Since gold had dropped $55+ the day before instead of selling it I thought I would be funny and took it to the Stack's booth. There wasn't much there except a few auction catalogs for the upcoming Baltimore sale, I can't even remember if they had any coins still out. There was a young man and a young woman (I'm 75 so almost everyone I see looks young) fiddling around on a computer. I stood there for a while with them ignoring me and finally said excuse me but do you offer a money-back guarantee on items bought at auction. Without blinking an eye the young man looked at me and said he would have to check with company management. I held out my hand to show him the coin in a 2X2 flip with the insert from the auction in one side and the coin in the other. I had to ask him to look at it and see when I bought it. He looked, said oh and handed it back to me. He either "didn't get it" or I wasn't being very funny. I was offered $770 by one dealer and $753 from another and decided to hang on a little longer since I'd always be able to sell it at or near melt at the monthly show.

The ANA Museum had some fantastic coins on display as shown by others in here show reports and my favorite without a doubt was the Auraria Collection of Dahlonega Mint Gold. The Collector Exhibits were great also my favorites being The Legacy of Charleston Slave Badge Makers which one First Place in the History & Politics category and Nobody's Perfect - a selection of South Carolina statehood quarter errors.

Last but not least there were lots of happy looking kids in attendance, several in Scout uniforms earning their Coin Collecting Merit Badge and others traversing the bourse searching for answers to trivia questions.

    Great report.
I was there on Friday attendance was light but the show was fairly busy. Doesn't surprise me at all that the attendants really picked up on Saturday, great dealers with great coins and a great location.
I got to look at a $10,000 capital plastics type set. Gorgeous....it had proof Morgan, IHC ,barbers...ect. All that next to Ike dollars and Washington 25c . Knock out set.

I saw the thread that said you would be there. I stopped to see @amwldcoin and he said you had stopped by. I spent the rest of my time at the show hoping I would somehow run in to you or @DrBuster to no avail. :'(

I was in fact the only Bayern Munich jersey wearing dude in there, ha! Although one guy and his wife(?) did talk to me a bit about Bayern, old time fan I guess and I let him know the score for the game earlier.
