Wow this Mercury dime went for a ton of money tonight, auction fever or??

This would need to upgrade by more than one grade to make up for the price this 1930-S dime sold for; in fact there are two listed on collectors corner same grade and TPG listed for right around a grand. I guess Ian and the consigner are happy; anyone see something I don't? some rare variety or does someone really think this will jump two grades.

I'm glad to see results like that on GC. I just sent my first consignment to them.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
WOW! is right 3 Big ones with the juice, the consigner has to be happy with one.
No rpm or ddo in CP’s guide. Maybe thought it is an upgrade candidate?
Very impressive result.
It closed at $2,945.25 with a PCGS Price Guide value of $1,000 at PCGS MS65FB.
It sold at MS66+FB level.
I wish they had a soft close (a bid adds 2-3 minutes to the close) after getting timed out on my snipe (not this coin)
Sounds like the PCGS Price Guide will be getting adjusted!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Tinkle contest perhaps between 2 bidders ???

I agree. I've decided to bite the bullet and begin the clearing out phase of my collection. Off to GC they go!
Wow, no sticker. One can only imagine.
Looks like it could 6 at best.
I've seen a LOT of mercury dimes going for very strong money on GC over the last few months...
Granted . . . the issue is a lot harder than it seems to be when you try to find it in high AU / Low MS. The 1930 and 1931 MM issues are murderously tough to find at any venue in what I would call a 'collectible' grade . . . but I have no idea why this one would ever sell for the amount indicated.

Good for everyone involved. Bidder #10 was certainly very aggressive and full of optimism.......... We need more results like this.
Best, SH
Bidders #8, #9, and #10 were all aggressive.
Bidder #7 topped out at $600 (before BP).
Try bidding on several coins of the same decontamination in ascending order on GC. Lost out on a few lots a few weeks ago, by not placing bids early thinking I would have time. Boy was I wrong.
I like fixed times since I can predict when auctions will end.
I'm not a huge fan of soft closes like Heritage and Stack's have because the time when my lots come up is unpredictable and makes it hard to plan the day.
I seriously doubt that. The result was an outlier and not at all representative of what examples in that grade trade for.

Here is another one I was thinking about bidding on tonight.... ended up going for 8x more than greysheet prices!!

There have probably been like 8-10 mercury dimes that I have been actively watching on GC over the last month that caused my jaw to drop.
That PCGS MS67FB CAC sold for $1,743.75 against a PCGS Price Guide of $165.00!

Bad time for me to want to buy dimes I guess lol.
@ShadyDave Dang that is just nuts!!

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Not necessarily. This thread has largely been about a small number of pieces that brought very strong prices. However, such results likely have zero impact on the vast majority of transactions.

That's ridiculously high.
Do auction results like this signal the beginning of a new boom or do they signal that too much money is flowing to people with more cash than sense?
I always wonder, when I see auction results such as this, whether the 'winner' is forever buried or did I miss something? Most of the time, I think they are buried....ICBW...Cheers, RickO
Me too. , but my 2nd consignment. Great Collection kicks numismatic ass.
I just sent in 16 killer PCGS coins many CACed OGH, ALL key & semi dates ei 55ddo 09SVDB ect . Never took a single image of them.
My guess is none of the above. More likely a number of bidders saw the coin in hand and thought it was a very likely upgrade.

Neither. A small number of high price transactions (or for that matter, low ones) usually has nothing to do with market trends. And for all we know, two very sharp bidders were willing to bet on a large upgrade. Even if the winner ends up losing money, it doesn't mean he was lacking in sense.

Is any 1930-S dime worth that kind of money? Not by my way of thinking.
A big win for the consignor. Looks they got into a hot must have bid war. CPG is $1020.
Polite way of saying more money than brains.
You didn't ask me, but yes. Regardless of your way of thinking or mine, one that grades 67FB or higher.

Well as an underbidder it did indeed have an effect on me.

The quest for "trophy's" of essentially common date coins strikes me as silly.
Well that is registry set collecting in a nutshell...
The consignor has high quality dimes and other coins for sure as several in that collection went very high! I was lucky enough to know this individual and to get a few from them privately before they went to auction! Who knows how much they would have went for! The collection was assembled by a few very astute collectors with an excellent eye!
