Austin, TX coin shops to visit......

rln_14rln_14 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭

Hello, I will be in Austn, Texas on Feb 29 and Mar 1. Anyone know of a good LCS in the Austin area I can visit? Possibly a coin show in the area on those days? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Reach out to the local club maybe? http://www.capitalcitycoinclub.com/

Next Round Rock show is SATURDAY APRIL 18th 9am - 4pm

There is a Feb 29th show in Schertz, Texas 78154 which is about an hour south. Too far for me (I haven't been to that show in several years - 4.5h is over my limit for a small show)

Austin is a nice city to visit.... Beautiful sunsets and walkways along the water... Old Austin is interesting and has a big music area. Never went to a coin show there, but visited a few times while living in Houston. Cheers, RickO

I live about an hour north of Austin and cannot recommend any coin shops in the city. ‘Austins Best Coin and Gold Exchange’ is in Round Rock, about 20 minutes north of the city off IH35. It’s small but may have something new and interesting come in since it’s near a large retirement community and the only true coin shop in town.

My LCS is in Harker Heights, also about an hour north-Texas Coin Connection. Closed on Sat and Sundays, so no help to you unless you call to set up an appt. Ken has a great selection and great to work with.

Make sure you see the bats come out at dusk on Congress!

I live just south of Fort Worth, but occasionally have to head towards Austin. Are either of those shops worth a drive?

    Any info helps.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the info, my wife and I will be checking out open houses and the surrounding area for a possible move there, very remote chance, but you never know

I would say they are worth the detour if you are headed south already. Ken, the owner of the Harker Heights shop, always attends the Central Texas/Round Rock Coin Show held every quarter, right off IH35. That show is worth a drive. Next one is April 18.

    I recommend

McBride's on Lamar- It's a gun store with an attached coin shop. The ladies who run it are incredibly nice, and they have a good selection

Village Coin at Spicewood Springs and 183- Good selection of lower-end US and foreign coins and paper.

Austin's Best Coin and Gold Exchange- Main St. in Roun Rock- Lots of bullion-related material, with some decent coins as well.

I also agree with @Winchester1873 - it's worth diverting to Killeen/Harker Heights to visit Ken Cute's shop.

The Schertz Coin Show on 2/29 is a decent one- I recommend the drive to San Antonio to attend it. It's on the north side, and you can get there in less than 90 minutes.

You Suck! Awarded 6/2008- 1901-O Micro O Morgan, 8/2008- 1878 VAM-123 Morgan, 9/2022 1888-O VAM-1B3 H8 Morgan | Senior Regional Representative- ANACS Coin Grading. Posted opinions on coins are my own, and are not an official ANACS opinion.

That show looks like it is a 2 he drive for me.....not too bad. If you have the time, anything about the show would be helpful. I appreciate your info.

I suspect it's been a while since you have visited Austin. It "was" a nice city a good number of years ago. I had considered moving there many years ago. However, as a native Texan, I'm ashamed of what it has become and it is not representative of our state.

On a positive note, the Round Rock coin show has been pretty good in the past "for a smaller show" (40 to 50 tables).

@CCGGG.... It has been many, many years... and I know what you mean. Cheers, RickO

Usually 40 or more tables set up. Dealers bring a good mix of classic silver and gold coins, bullion, moderns, ancient and world coins, and a great selection of currency. There’s a drawing every hour with nice prizes donated by dealers and the local coin club.

Get there early because a lot of the dealers start packing at around 2.

If you’re looking for something specific and don’t see it in a display, just ask. My last 3 purchases there were the result of asking if they had a particular year, mint mark, and grade-and the dealer going through his slab boxes under the table and finding what I was looking for. (Example-1934-S $1 PCGS AU58; Stone Mountain Commem in a Rattler with CAC.) I’m familiar with all the dealers that attend and all are friendly and knowledgeable.

If you like BBQ, make sure you hit the Salt Lick which is fairly close-by.

I hope you get to attend one!
