Long Beach NEWP GTG

I'll spare you a full coin show report. Don't have that much to say, other than it was a normal Friday at the beach. Not either busier, or quieter, than usual.

I purchased one coin. It was probably a year or more ago that I made the claim that I needed to stop all of my "side projects", and focus on the early, (expensive), type coins I hadn't acquired yet. Well, I finally did do that:

Photos from sale by Heritage auction last year.

I'm interested in the assessments....

Unfortunately, I'd have to agree unless it was granted a reprieve due to rarity.

Well, this generated less interest than I expected. ;)

But, honestly, given these pictures, I would have guessed a "problem" coin too. In fact, I may well have tracked this coin when it was auctioned, (it's in my grade sweet spot), but decided to pass on it. I certainly didn't win it.

Now, I know you will all think I'm nuts, but it really does look better in person. I was rather shocked by the photo when I found it after getting home! Yes, there is a slight porosity in person, but it (honestly) doesn't look as bad as the pic. Whatever. Guess PCGS agreed, since it is straight graded.

My biggest issue with the coin is the weak reverse...but if you are shopping for VG coins, compromises must be made.

So, here you go. Agree or not...doesn't matter at this point. ;)

That is an awesome coin. Congratulations on focusing your collecting and achieving what you set out to do. That is a very historic coin and no doubt a great addition to your collection.

    Felicidades!

It's Friday night so a lot of folks are probably not paying much attention to the forum. You probably would have attracted more interest by tomorrow morning. In any case, congrats on acquiring the coin.

Congratulations on a great addition to your collection.... A coin from 1797 is a great addition to anyone's collection. Cheers, RickO

Looks like a nice coin for the grade. Early US type is difficult and I’ve had my own problems finding pieces that were nice, but fit inside the budget. Nothing too distracting here. Just the usual early copper planchet stuff.

My first thought, without reading any replies, was at least a straight grade 6. ....I’d assumed you’d look for a straight grade example.

    Nice pickup. 🤓👍🏻
