Auction woes and selling for a total loss.

I decided to test the waters with a $.99 auction, against my better judgment. I listed an UNC 1939 double die obverse nickel, very hard to locate, and the auction ended today for $5.50. It was like a punch in the...gut! I would estimate the value between $50-$200.
The final sale price was about 10 times less than what I paid. And after shipping and fees I should clear about .97¢
I see why there are so few .99¢ auctions anymore.
Granted this variety is somewhat obscure, but I am frankly stunned at the lack of interest for a variety with about 5-7 known examples.
Any one have some cheese to pair with my whine? Extra sharp or blue please.

Yup. Big Mistake.
Obscure and ungraded can sometimes be difficult to overcome. Sometimes the listing itself is flawed or feedback by the lister is low etc etc etc. could be a lot of things. Most of the time is not a lot of eyeballs or the wrong ones

Raw coins attributed by the seller are going to be are difficult sell on ebay. We here know that you are knowledgeable about Jefferson Nickels but the buyers on ebay do not. The outcome probably would have been much better if it had been graded instead of raw.
Tough weekend for auctions.. Valentine’s Day, Monday Holiday and School Vacation starts this week.
You are correct that it is an obscure and niche' variety, so don't be disappointed when it doesn't do well.
Typically, 99¢ auctions are more popular coins and more well-known varieties. I would have ended the auction as "Item no longer available" if you had any doubts.
As far as your snack goes, a nice limburger and a bottle of moscatel. Or perhaps Manischewitz with an insulin chaser?

Yes I thought of that but then he is “flooding the market” as apparently there are only around 5-7 examples extant. Also listing the same variety coin for $195 after one just “sold”for $5 (by the same seller) doesn’t seem too savvy to me. Maybe I’m missing the obvious. I’ve haven't bought on eBay for 15 years so I am out of the loop

I am going to guess this is another auction but used the same picture and has a few of these to sell. This time he is selling the way he should of done on the 1st one. Just a guess though.

It could be as simple as the coin was listed as a buy-it-now and the OP forgot to end the listing when he set up the auction.
As others have stated, no reserve auctions aren’t the best for more esoteric items. Sometimes buy-it-now with best offer is the ideal option.
Who says it should bring between $50 and $200. It looks to me like just another obscure cherry-picker variety that buyers want only if they can cherry-pick it.
I am going to guess the opposite, that he canned the auction after it closed and relisted.

Looking at the time stamps, looks like the cheap auction closed and the same coin delisted at the higher BIN afterward. IF the seller simply canceled the auction and then listed it at the BIN that's shady and certainly shouldn't have been brought to everyone's attention with this thread lamenting how he got "auction woes" and selling at a total loss.

Something super rare apparently that’s raw is about the worst combination to list as a 99c start auction.
And even worse mistake would be if you canceled it after and listed BIN but that’s TBD of course.
Serious question - why?
An unattributed, raw, scarcity listed on eBay, in a 99 cent auction, is the perfect way to flush $200.....Protect yourself at all times!

Yes that can be par for the course starting a bay listing at 99c especially if raw.
A bin / make offer or auction starting at say 70 pct of its MV then if no bidders reduce say to 65 pct MV if does not sell. Otherwise just throw back in eBay store at what you will take.
Due to current market conditions you need to protect yourself. The reality of the market place can throw water on / soak the best of us. Tuition can be cruel.
It’s easier to buy coins than sell them.

Minor varieties have a very thin market. It may take years to find a buyer at the $50 level. But they are out there. Patience should pay off.

1) I listed something worth $20 for .99 start and it went to $700. Turns out I did not know what I had.
2) I listed something worth $20 for a Buy It Now of $25 and it sold in 10 minutes. What did I miss?
(Follow-up) I was actually a referberatory kerzeren moduliforitory deaswort. They are worth about $2300.
I was trying to give the OP a way out, quite obvious what had happened.
