My proof Trade Dollar

At least that's what the label says.
I wonder if it isn't a proof they'll give me 'full retail' for it?

That's pretty damn cool.
Not unless it was a branch mint proof from San Francisco!
Why not a “rather well” 😉 circulated business strike, with no mintmark remaining?

There is no mint mark. Or, if they were knowledgeable, they could count the number of edge reeds. Just a WAG.

Sad.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Why? I'll bet someone would pay over $100 for that coin.
Looks over graded, PO1 at best/worst however you look at it. Also bet its a 78-S
That's different. I like it.
Has anyone heard of ACCGS or the Beverly Hills Coin Club?

The Beverly Hills Coin Club is legitimate. If I remember correctly, Buddy Ebsen of The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones was one of the founders. He was quite the collector.
Why?
Take a closer look at the information contained on the slab... There is an appraised value printed on the slab label of $1500. So $100 is not even 10% of the so-called appraised value.
So what's several hundred dollars among friends?

Over graded
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
Gradeflation.
The $1,500 appraised value is also dated 2018 so pretty recent.
To be fair, they did say "Circulated Proof"
Is yours circulated, sir?
Let's compare apples to apples!
I’d still like opinions as to how realistically, the coin could be attributed as a Proof, rather than a business strike?

Total BS. Absolutely impossible to discern if it is an 1878 or 1878-S with the remaining details.

Well...I cannot see how that coin can be called a proof.... I can see the year... and that it is a Trade Dollar... but that is where it ends....Cheers, RickO
A fly-by-night grading service slabbed it as a Proof because no one can prove it is not one. I'll bet some very corroded coins get slabbed because no one can prove they are not genuine.
Theoretically you could use the rims, or a reed count. I don’t see any rim left on this coin though, and I haven’t seen a study of reed counts for BS vs PR so even that is out.
I went to their website and it seems it hasn't been updated since Oct. 2018
www.accgs.org is no longer.

Highly doubt it. Has anyone every seen a 19th century proof coin get to that extreme wear level before?
Never mind I googled and found a proof 10 Gobrecht dollar.
That’s still a far cry, grade-wise, from the Trade Dollar.😉

I’m slightly relieved, as I thought perhaps I was somehow missing something. 😬
