Does it pay to save BU pennies from the 60's and 70's?

About 50 years from they would love to have them! How does anyone think we get BU coins from the 1800'S?

I don't know if it "pays"....but you can use them to build a set, or put a roll together, or use them side by side to work on your grading.

Unfortunately no, it's OK to spend them.

Discounting varieties the most valuable one is the '71-S which wholesales about $7.00

Some of these rolls are undervalued because large percentages are badly spotted or tarnished. If there were more demand it would be apparent just how small the supply can be. Mint set coins can be almost universally tarnished (like the '68-P).

Most of these rolls aren't worth much but you can't go by Greysheet because the markets are too thin to establish accurate buy/ sell spreads. Greysheet does the best job in numismatics at pricing but it can be highly misleading. You can't sell something like a '68-D roll and if you could buyers probably won't want your rolls because there are too many bad coins in it.

'79 rolls tend to be OK but there's no demand for the date.

Sellers of this stuff have the markets to themselves.

The really valuable BU cent rolls are '80's and '90's. But these are often rotted.

If I had a boatload of the kinds of coins you asked about I'd put on a pair of gloves and go through them one by one a pick out the very best of them and put them in plastic tubes. The rest I'd spend.

It should also be noted there are numerous valuable varieties and Gems can bring very good money. Some Gems like the '77-D are tough in mint sets and not as tough in rolls.

There are two ways that are easy to sell them. Offer them in bulk at about 70% of bid to variety hunters or just ship the better dates and hope for the best. If you have mostly common dates run the rolls together and make a few nice choice rolls to save instead of a big pile of them.

If you have good storage conditions and you're in no hurry then you can just go ahead and wait for the markets to catch up.

Cents were saved in large quantities so none of these will ever be rare. Most appear to be undervalued currently. This goes many times over for dates that tend to tarnish like the '65 to '71.

Oh, and save all those 1974 sm dt rolls. Especially the S mint.

I keep pre 82 cents, but they are probably more trouble than they are worth.

I've got a bunch of rolls stashed around here somewhere....some I've had for 30-40 years!

I save all the wheaties.... and of course, change builds up in the pockets, so I have jars for cents, nickels, dimes and quarters. I will eventually roll them and take them to the bank. Cheers, RickO

I have some original bank-wrapped rolls of Cents from the 1960s and 1970s that were acquired for another purpose. I see absolutely no reason to retain them as collectibles, but haven't disposed of them as yet. Perhaps this is the year. The game IS NOT worth the candle.
