3 days into the world of coin collecting and I'm hooked

I've been researching nonstop everything coin. before I knew it I was dumping out my piggy banks and sifting through everything spending several hours on a handful at a time. I had no idea how many unique coins were out there or how big the collector market was and I haven't even scratched the surface. I will be ordering a coin microscope and the cases ect.. and stashing a bunch of my findings away starting a collection of my own. Better do it now before everything shifts to crypto currency, I can just imagine, year 2100 someone walking his robot dog and looks down getting excited as he spots a 2020 penny laying on the ground.

Welcome to your doom! I mean, to your room, er our room.
Have you found a "W" quarter yet?
@1992coin
Welcome aboard, I hope you enjoy this hobby as I have, and I do hope you learned a few things here on the boards.
Always remember, a true Numismatist is a position of Trust and teaching to others what you learn over the years, it is an Honorable hobby, one where your knowledge will not be used to take advantage of those without knowledge, it is knowing the value of being fair and faithful to your fellow man, we in this hobby call it Integrity.
Some have it when they come into the hobby and no explanation is necessary, you seem to fit in here from what I have seen of your post and Attitude,
I would hope those that do not understand that, learn.
Again, you are Welcomed

Not yet @Onastone. didn't even know it was a thing until you mentioned it. Like @Smudge said I have to be careful not to overload myself. I was just reading about the AMW and AMC pennies. I know I'm definitely going to inspect my change, and before I move out of the rural area I live in I will try to trade my friends change banks for cash and see what collections I can purchase too.
Your a ray of sunshine to this forum! Esp. Now.😊 Your avatar (1992coin) hopefully is meant for my dream find? The 1992 Close AM Variety?

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Thank you @Texast. I am learning here as well and still have much to share when I get a bit more organized. I'm going to have to head to the q&a soon to get some more opinions on some of my inherited stuff. It is really hard to tell some double dies with just a magnifying glass. I've been taking zoom in pictures with my camera and holding a magnifying glass to the photo lol.
@joeykoins 1992 is my birth year but it is funny you mentioned that I was just reading about that coin on another page.
@1992coin , use the search feature here, this is a huge database of knowledge to read and explore.
Many do not realize there are Two decades of Post here to go through, choose you keywords carefully and you will find many questions already have loads of answers, and if you still wondering after that ask it here, the Q&A doesn't get much traffic.
Again welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard. This is a great hobby that can be enjoyed as a pensioner or as a billionaire. As long as you're having fun, it doesn't matter a bit.
Great start by getting on this board. Other recommendation for you is to find a coin club in your area, and find a coin show, both of those should really open your eyes to all the hobby has to offer.

Welcome to a great hobby.
My little advise, buy the book, then the coin.
Information is your best friend.
Welcome aboard!
I enjoy the hobby just as much or more than I did as a kid in the 1980s.
Having a focus and not trying to collect “everything” really helped me.
Thinking more of your excitement reminds me of when I too first got the bug. Way back around 1995. Like you. I was hooked and fired up to go out and buy, buy and buy. Before I knew it, my collection grew enormously. I was very pleased and caught up in the collecting game. Now, I'm not saying this can happen to you like it did me but sooner than later anothr bug had bitten me. It was the "selling" bug. That's right, Before I knew it, I went and sold just about all my collection! All I'm saying is be careful what you do. Don't get over your head. Anyway, like I mentioned earlier, you are a spring in our steps in all us collector's with your strong enthusiasm. -joey 😎

Welcome to the hobby. I don’t think you need a microscope to get started. A simple 5-10x loupe is plenty to examine coins, even for doubled dies or other errors. Also, beware that finding a valuable variety in change is exceedingly rare. You might find more joy filling holes in a set of cents, nickels, dimes, or quarters.
Welcome.
Study and go slowly. Tuition can be expensive.
Lance.
Yep!
@david3142 yes I better start now while I still have a chance.
"Way back around 1995"....lol
Whippersnapper newbie! 😉
Welcome! This is the place to ask questions and learn.
Welcome! This is a fascinating hobby that can be enjoyed by all walks of life. When you move from searching change to buying coins, you need to start being careful about what you acquire. You'll get good advice here, as well as honesty when you make a mistake (which we call "tuition").

@1992coin....Welcome aboard.... You have entered a hobby with many, many avenues of enjoyment... Old coins, new coins, U.S. coins, foreign coins, gold coins, silver coins, copper coins, rare coins, slabbed coins and pocket change. Get the Redbook and learn....it is all fun. Cheers, RickO
The longer (50+ years now) that I collect coins the more I realize how much I don't know about numismatics. I still have "tons" to learn, even with regards to the series I specialize in.
Welcome to the hobby.
Welcome ... and ... most of us here have ties older than you!
Take time to read and study before spending much money. Try to avoid the temptation to 'buy everything.'

Welcome to the hobby!
Have no fear, it will soon beat you down. Before you know it, you'll be digging through trash barrels at the local car wash looking for discarded change, constantly checking coin returns on vending machines, rejected coin slots on coinstar machines, etc.
And THEN, when you have hit rock-bottom and decide you are going to swear off this all-consuming habit, you'll find a crappy old wheat cent lying on the ground that looks as though it has been put through a meat grinder and you'll be hooked again.
Cheers
Bob
Welcome!
As others wrote, go slowly. Try to stifle the urge to buy everything that tickles your fancy---this is a good way to wind up with an assortment that isn't a focused collection. Being focused is important because, if done right, you will develop real expertise regarding grading, varieties, and scarcity. There is also a greater chance that you will stick around, and not burn out quickly. This said, many U.S. coin collectors put together a basic type set, and there are Dansco 7070 albums that only have a few moderately expensive types--this is a good way to develop some knowledge of U.S. coinage.
One of the most important things to do is view lots of coins in hand--you cannot learn to grade properly by just looking at images. So, go to local coin shows and coin shops---you will see lots of coins (a high percentage will be junk or in grades that don't interest you, and that's OK). You need to see good, bad, and ugly coins en route to becoming a seasoned collector.
Second, try to find a mentor--join a local coin club as a first step. If a certain type of coin (or token, medal,...) really interests you, join a specialty society.
Watch your finances---this is a hobby, and there is NO guarantee that you will recover what you have sunk into your collection once it is sold. Additionally, take cost into account when starting to form a new collection--it's easy to grab cheaper pieces and then hit a wall when more expensive coins are needed for completion. Additionally, some sets are extensive, and finding eye-appealing coins will take years, if not decades. Patience and stamina are both needed.
Spend a modest fraction of your hobby money on books--they will teach you about things you need to know and will help keep you interested in numismatics during times when you aren't actively buying coins for your collection.
Lastly, get in the habit of selling a coin or two every once in a while. Buying coins is much easier for a collector than selling them. Make an effort to learn the workings of the business end of the hobby (grading, pricing, kinds of dealers, auctions, …).

You’ll really enjoy it. Coin collecting and/or research cash be enjoyed on so many levels from aesthetics to intellectual to art to history and beyond. It’s a shame that more women aren’t involved. I know my wife enjoys my collection and learning the history of the types I buy.
