I thought the same thing! And it was found in France, not somewhere in the U. S.

Amazing! Definitely “you suck!” worthy! France makes sense if these were European medals as speculated. I wonder if we’ll see more from Europe?

As for all-time “you suck” I’m still reserving that for the Saddle Ridge rusted can find right now .

I have trouble understanding the continued price support for these given where they likely came from and what they represent.

I'm confused. (Pre coffee here in Hawaii) The metal of the original, authentic coins is Pewter?

I seem to remember a trio of full band mercs, a crappy ebay picture, and a big windfall.

But this certainly eclipses that by at least 2X

I can only imagine how much more than the $97,000 + value this would bring at auction, I would think $300,000 within a year.

What a find...I wonder how long PCGS had this to verify authenticity, I'm sure there was a lot of work to make sure. Good job!

    What about the 1854-S $5?

A fair question. Does suckfulness count more or less if you owned something all along but either did not know you had it or were unaware of its worth, such as the Saddle Ridge Hoard (it was on the finders' property) and/or the 1854-S $5, or if you find that pearl of great price in the wild at a ridiculously cheap price?

I'm not saying it didn't happen like the story says it did. But call me skeptical. Lots of flags in that story, red and otherwise.

Your thread, your choice. And depending upon that choice, I also nominate the Walton 1913 Liberty nickel - at least from the time it was thought to be a fake😉

I thought about including that in my examples, but he knew what it was when he bought it. The heirs were just the victims of a mis-authentication for a while (40 years).

Yes, it was a four dollar Stella!!!!

Worth about a quarter mill today... :s

Someone found an original flowing hair dime in AU condition in a junk box over in England in the 1960s!! Paid $.50 for it and brought it back to the states where he realized what it was and authenticated it. Worth about $100k today! That is almost as amazing as the OP’s story!!!

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Somewhere back in the 1990's I was at a major show when I ran across a dealer I knew with a proverbial ship eating grin on his face. I asked what what he so happy about and he told me that with the Iron Curtain gone he had decided to go on a buying trip in Eastern Europe. Driving around in the eastern half of what was then Czechoslovakia he stopped at a flea market to look for coins or whatever. He found a box of obsolete European paper money that had in it over $35,000 face in large denomination large size U.S. currency for just a few Kroner(?) per note. The seller had simply assumed that they were obsolete, as would be any European currency of that era. When I ran into him he had just sold the lot for an obscene amount.

Dealer I used to do business with in Erie, PA found a nice 1812/1 large 8 in XF in a box of wheat pennies... that he paid $50 for

    BHNC #248 … 140 and counting.

Great find. Thanks for sharing. My best find is a 1922 No D which graded VF that was in a jar of wheat cents back in the 70's.

Not a coin story, but my buddy sells southern antiques as his business. He frequently has great picking stories. One of my recent favorites was when he found a pocket bible that could be attributed to a confederate officer in a box of old VHS tapes at a flea market. He paid 50 cents and subsequently sold it for more than $2k.
