Curious about my buy at a pawn shop?

Bought two sets today. 2005 and 2007 proof. Only paid $20.00 for both sets. Presidential coins look more like cameo! Help is appreciated, much!

If you bought these to collect, and fill a niche in your collection; you did better than buying these when offered through the U.S. mint. Not much upside other than that IMHO.

Good deal! I like it. Sounds like you're having fun.

Not for me, but if you like them.....that's all that matters. :)

Greysheet bid on a 2005 set is $3.75 Greysheet bid on 2007 set is $12.50

I actually have both sets in inventory and would have sold them to you for less than $20 including shipping. It's not a horrible price, but it is not a bargain. Beware pawn shops. In my humble experience, they are not a good place to buy widgets.

$3.75 for a 2005 set is that correct?

1970 I've made a decent profit breaking some of them up.

They are nice looking coins. Collecting them won't send you to the poor farm.

Yes, it is. Shocking, isn't it?

When I get a chance, i'm going to take them to a wholesaler who will pay me 25% back. So i'm going to sell them for 2.80 after I bought them for 2.60

Yes! I'd be breaking them up on ebay pretty quick. Can almost sell the Kennedy alone for that price.

Most of those sets have all the value in the Kennedy, firstand Lincoln. Those seem to be the only widely collected series still. Might as well spend the nickel and dime

With a face value of $2.96? Better to spend them 1st.

Like @jmlanzaf said, all modern proofs are cameo. Have been since about 1970.

As others have indicated, if you like them that's really all that matters. If you're buying them with the intention of selling them in the future, you lost money... not huge amounts of money.

Regardless of the value of some coins, I put a value on the enjoyment something brings me while I own it. So if I pay $10 for a proof set and I get years of gratification looking at them....it’s a win in my book.

Many collectors just don't realize how dead the modern proof set market really is. The talk about "breaking them up and selling them on eBay" fails to take all selling costs into account and ignores the time involved completely.

    All glory is fleeting.

But then I've got to break them all out and spend that time to realize the extra 16 cents. LOL.

I've been lucky enough to find someone buying at 90 percent of bid. Small quantity and takes for ever to pay. So almost worth it.
