This is an eBay first- emotional plea for free stuff

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,078 ✭✭✭✭✭

Got this message today from a new, 0 feedback member.

hello! i have a difficult question .. i don’t like doing this but i wanted to ask if i can have that for my son? the thing is, i don’t have any money because it’s going to bills and hospital bills. but i don’t want to talk about that..my son wants to hold onto it for his kids and i think that’s so amazing that he’s already thinking like that. if you don’t think this can happen.. that’s okay, i apologize in advance. have a wonderful day.

I think I’ll send him a care package.

    Never hurts to ask, right?

Seems like I've read similar ebay messages for charity in past threads. People using various situations that you'd be naturally sympathetic to like, disabled, veteran, etc.

What was your ebay item that triggered the message?

This strikes me as virtual panhandling. I wonder if the guy has separate accounts... one for getting free stuff, and others for selling all the free stuff he gets.

I guess I'm just super cynical these days...

Oh come on, I’ve heard others argue here that we all start as zero feedback as potential scammers and needing of free stuff.

Not new. I have been selling on 2 accounts for 12 years on the mighty bay. My favorite was " I am a disabled veteran living on a fixed income and ask that you accept my offer for your item" It was a third of my market value asking price. I actually sold it for ask a month latter. He had listed more then 100k of coins alone and thousands of feedback's. There are some folks who send the story to many people and a few bite its no loss for them there not buyers and dont care if you block them.

Me thinks don't respond. In my experience, there are real support groups, non-profits that are receptive to the families of ill children. Vague public appeals concern me. IMO. Peace Roy

Back when the reverse proof presidential dollars were issued and not I listed a Truman dollar (coin only. no silver medal) for a very favorable price.

Someone messaged me and said he wanted it for his grandson and asked if I would consider selling it to him for a "reasonable" price, meaning well below market value. I invited him to shop for comparable coins on ebay.

We get 2-3 requests for free coins each month, usually accompanied by a story about a child. Had one guy we didn't respond to then send us a nasty message about us not giving his kid a free coin (sent a long message about a $100 coin he wanted for free) through our contact us page on our website.

We also get someone who sends very lowball offers all of the time along with a message about being a retired disabled soldier.

We donate to several young numismatist programs and other programs at shows. The sad truth is online, you have no idea if the person the person you are giving stuff to is what they claim they are.
