How about a category dedicated to errors, potential errors, questions about errors, and discussion of errors?
All error posts moved there, too?

There's already a Q&A forum. People don't use it. Maybe it's the name: "U.S. Coin Forum" Q&A might seem too much like an FAQ page. So, if you have a question about a coin made in the U.S., it ends up here. Maybe a "U.S. error coin" forum might gather those people.

On the other hand, the forum has been so quiet lately, we need the threads to keep things lively. >:)

I would say have a new forum called “Coin Roll Finds” which would encompass these plus a number of other types of messages. A sticky note could be added with resources to often-recommended sites and literature.

Of course people don't use Q&A. Errors are exciting. Questions and answers are dull.
And you don't find any questions or answers lying in the street all run over and maybe worth a fortune. B)

I think an error forum would help pull a lot of the basic newbie questions out of the main US forum. Until recently, I didn't know that the Q&A forum was supposed to handle that sort of thing, so I can't blame inexperienced collectors for using the US forum to ask about errors.

Not a bad idea, unless you enjoy seeing a "Is my road rash coin an error" pushing out posts that would be of interest to advanced collectors and numismatists.

    Just my opinion

Most of these people are just looking for information, that's a good thing.

If it is posted just for trolling then get out the ban hammer.

The "ban hammer" cost us some actual informative posters, IMO.
The proliferation of...... (being kind) ...."newbies" don't seem to show ME much promise.
I could easily be wrong and they will become dedicated hobbyists. THAT would be a VERY good thing. :)

I'd ...definitely support a consideration of amnesty and reconsideration of all the banned posters from a year or so ago.
    Some might return and contribute.
THAT also would be a ...good...thing.

    IMO.

Honestly, I don't care. I find it easy enough to ignore the posts that annoy me. I wish some other people would also learn to ignore because I think they are sometimes rude or condescending or downright insulting to some of those newbies.

I voted no, I’d rather have new collectors posting here where other thread topics might catch their eye and inspire them. I’ve been on other forums where newbie posts are all grouped together and it seems the most knowledgeable people don’t bother visiting or replying.

Such threads are easy enough to ignore here, most of the time I’ll give the OP a quick look and if others have already replied, close the thread and move on.

I voted "no". I'm not an error collector, but I find them interesting. If error threads showed up elsewhere, I likely wouldn't look and wouldn't learn.

I think the main problem are the misleading videos and jumbo jumbo floating on YouTube and Facebook. Will turn newbies into gold hunters quick. They rush into it all and can’t accept a answer other then you are rich. You have to understand how to walk before you can run

I voted no.... Though I do not collect errors, I find them very interesting. Sure, we get a lot of posts asking "Is this an error" Or "What kind of error is this"....From new or potentially new collectors. Remember, there are different gateways into the hobby...and for all those who sell coins, more collectors means more customers. And for all those bemoaning the 'death of the hobby'...I suggest tolerance and kindness to these new people.... they are the future. Cheers, RickO

I find it interesting that the members who are most adamantly opposed to a separate forum don't realize that a separate forum would make it easier to find the error threads they care so much about, they would all be together in one place. it would also provide more space on page one of the US Forum for other threads. that seems like a win-win outcome.

Not really. A dealer specializing in errors would want as much chatter as possible. If only to create interest.

A dealer specializing in anything would want as much chatter as possible for their niche, should trade dollars have their own category? High-end rainbow toners their own category?

I thought I knew something about what I already had until I logged in to CU and began reading a wide variety of posts. l was amazed at the depth and breadth of knowledge here. My participation here motivated me to reexamine my whole collection. I discovered varieties, errors, VAMs and so much more. This forum affords me a comfortability to show and tell, converse, laugh, think and learn. I'm 70 years old yet this hobby is ageless for me. This morning I picked up 5 OPA tokens, a brass bank token, 1 vulcanized fiber and 1 plastic sales tax token and a French legion Vietnam medal at a flea market. Who'd a thunk? Peace Roy

Hmmmm, I see your point. People finding stray trade dollars and rainbow toners in the wild would be unlikely to find information about their new finds.
I think it's best to leave it alone so we can help all the trade dollar and rainbow toner and "error" finders find their place in our unified community.

Define "newbies"? Low post count would prove nothing. And we currently have a couple people with high post counts posting damaged coins.

Because one needs a basic understanding of the minting process to decipher legitimate and faked mint errors, I would think errors will always have a place in broad coin discussions. Sometimes the mental gymnastics needed to understand a complicated mint error is an awesome teacher of the lessons and learning of general coin creation.

As another post noted, there really is no need for a separate category for errors. Or for anything else related to coins. Other wise, how about separate categories for literature, counterfeits, gold, coppers, exonumia, etc?
