Is this 1844 dime a counterfeit?

davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,792 ✭✭✭✭✭

I messaged a seller 'this coin is a counterfeit', their response is 'no it is not'. It came out of an old collection. What do you think?

Why would anyone choose a key date and make such a crappy copy?

    An old counterfeit collection?

The numerals look very similar to the punches they use on Chinese counterfeits for other coins.

Somebody please post a picture of a real one to compare the date digits to.

Looks bad to me. The gap between 1 and 8 looks too wide. The inner loops of the 8 also too big.

From a distance it might only be partially counterfeit, tell the seller to look at it a little closer to their face.

I was looking at notch in top cross member in shield above E, funky 3rd star, and difference of level of denticles versus rim edge.

The rim edge is quite odd (looks upset to me)--has the coin in the OP's post been 'spooned?"

it still seems to have reeding, so couldn't have been spooned that much

just trying to help a seller with a $400 item that will probably eventually have an unhappy buyer. I came here to check if anyone thought I was wrong with my assessment.

Top is from PCGS CoinFacts, MS-66.
    Bottom is the fake.
Clear differences in serifs on the date - bottom of the 1 and crosslets on the 4s.
There is one known proof obverse die and one known MS obverse die.
Both use the same date gang punch.
