Carson City $1 GSA Hoard in Original US Postal Box Labeled 1878 UNOPENED

I cane across a gsa hoard box labeled 1878 from 1973 that has never been opened. It has postal marks on the original box for delivery with its recipient on the label. Looking for recommendations and thoughts on if I should keep intact or open it up from a collectors value perspective. I’m in no rush to do anything, but thought I’d ask the forum. Yes, it is too bad it wasn’t labeled 1879 on the box lol. In 3 years, the delivery date would 50 years old. The coin itself would be 142 years old by that time.

That is a nice find.... Where did you 'come across' this little treasure? I would guess it has a better premium unopened.... I had several of those, but my curiosity never allowed me to keep them intact. Cheers, RickO

I’ve had a couple unopened GSA boxes. Some in the original postal box as well. I just couldn’t resist and opened them. Have one 1881CC that looks to be 65. I’ll be sending it in next month.

If you can resist it, I’d keep it sealed. It will likely retain better value overall than the risk of finding it to be a low end BU.

Speaking of Yoda, I bet you didn’t know he was a great singer, too.

Don't get greedy. Promote the unopened box, sell it for cash and don't look back. Let someone else worry about getting the coins inside graded and stickered.

    All glory is fleeting.

See if you can x-ray it and if the date/mm will show. I haven't yet tried it, but it might.

I'd open it. I can't own a coin I can't see. Not into owning boxes. I don't think the spread between sealed and opened is enough to warrant not looking.

You only live once, make a plan to document your good fortune so when you open it, the decision is part of the enjoyment. I can't imagine selling something like that unopened. I think your reward is knowing exactly what you have. No regrets. IMHO. Peace Roy

So, people pay a premium for a box. If the Chinese and Russians can counterfeit PCGS slabs and come close on coins, how hard would opening and resealing a box be?

I'm thinking this may be legit in that somebody would have needed to believably fake the box, postal label and computerized font from the period. That's a lot of effort for anybody. Plus I'm liking that the 1878 is partially visible under the label.

Does anybody else know if it was common practice for the external shipping boxes to note the year of the GSA coin within?

For security reasons, yo would NEVER do that today!

I can also confirm that Turner, Montana's zip code is 59542...and I find it interesting that the RECEIVING post office stamped it...vs. the originating post office,as is the common practice today.

I own two, both of which have the 1878 in blue lettering on the outside of the mailing box. The opened one was purchased at an estate sale and included the PCGS 65 gem you see, the other was purchased unopened and remains so--bought at the 2017 Denver ANA World's Fair of Money:

I think that might be normal practice for a registered package.

Turner, Montana x 2. Doesn't that seem a bit strange? Population of 61 at the last census.

There are literally thousands of GSA dollars for sale on ebay right now.

But only a handful are in unopened boxes.

For those watching this chain, I attempted to use an X-ray machine, as well as a CT scanner with 3D image (healthcare systems) to see within this box without opening it. Unfortunately, this was unsuccessful and unable to see the coin and it’s design in any clarity. Oh well, it was worth a shot, but technology has its limitations too!

Thanks for the update! I've opened unopened GSAs and found a mix, with a couple 65/66s and some PLs. Haven't hit a DMPL yet, but I've had some okay toning on the mixed CC $15 boxes.

For the most part, however, I've kept my 60 or so unopened GSAs in their original condition.

Mail it into PCGS have them open it up and then instruct what to do once you have it open. Let us know how it goes.

I add a label and note what’s in my box including order# date ordered date shipped and mint code. Plus how many of what. I do it from looking into my history sales and compare shipping number. Then store it away without opening the box. The mint used to put the info on boxes but stopped when they disappeared in shipping.
