Cheerios Coins

I've seen people talking about the Cheerios Sacagawea, and how it has extra details in the tail feathers, and how it's super rare. No, I don't have one of those. But..... going through some of my stuff, I came across a Cheerios Cent. It's not packaged very well, has lots of spots, and they were quite clever putting the COA on the back of the packaging. This is probably as close as I'll get to the Sacagawea dollar- there are Sac images on the front of this package!!

So, did Cheerios do any other coins? This doesn't seem to be too special although it's pre-zinc.

Does anybody else have a Cheerios coin?

I have a couple cents. And they are indeed zinc.

I think they retail for $5-10 on a good day, or they used to anyway.

They just did the $ and the cent.

had this one a few years ago. enjoyed finding it (needle in a haystack find) and sold it (with regrets) because of financial need. always on the lookout for another but you know how lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place (or can it???)

@CaptHenway, if I recall correctly, is the discoverer of the reverse’s tail feather feature.

I had one of those (later sold it). It was a PCGS 68. Neat story! Nobody knew it had the special tail detail when they first issued them in the Cheerios boxes.

It’s a true old fashion hunt like with the 1955 double die. I wonder how many ended up in flea market cases for $15.

I doubt the mint is melting coins. They got the seignorage (profit) when they minted it and would not want to give that up.

Oooops, senior moment. Of course it's zinc....I was thinking it was pre 1982, I'm losing my mind. Making this penny quite ordinary.

@dpoole wow! Is this a photo from the coin you had? Such great shape and detail. Who would expect such treasures in cereal boxes?

I might be wrong but I think the Cheerios coins were made in late 1999. If that is the case then the package represents that provenance.

Just searched Cheerios and here you are Anyway, are the cents exactly the same or is there some difference? Secondly, any value outside 1c ?

I've got a few cents IOP. Saw a few of the dollars at flea markets but they were beat to death from collateral damage. Peace Roy

If you can get our hosts to certify one 68 or better it would be worth a lot. May as well buy a Powerball ticket or 50.

Hmmm, no mention of the cent in the article as to die markers or discriminations. So, you would have to send one in for grading still in the original packaging to obtain the designation. Or I missed it trying to read on my cell phone. Well, the article made me hungry 😂

Still no definite answer. Lets try again. Are there any physical differences in the "Cheerios" 2000 1c and the business strike 2000 1c?
Here is the Coin facts 2000 in a 69 - Looks the same to me and worth far less in a better grade.
I mean I suppose I could write Cheerios on the submission form and then go ahead and wish in the other hand.

Cheerios! I'm getting hungry again

Side note: The 1999 D cent has a red proof like category on Coin facts, still looking for pics though.

No. To get the Cheerios designation the coin must be submitted in the Cheerios holder, at least that’s my understanding.
Edit: you are submitting a coin without seeing the reverse. May be problematic.

My eyes may be playing tricks on me but, I do see a slight difference now that they are pictured together.
The bottom serif on C in CENT points to a different spot on the E.
The Cheerios (bottom) points to just above the middle serif on E.
And the Business Strike (top) points to just below the top serif on E.
