Decided I wanted me a T-1 Buffalo but it's not the 66 I wanted.

The colors look a little weird - but then again I'm not a nickel guy - the strike looks really sharp, particularly on the reverse.

It looks too well struck, is it one of those giant coasters?

Wel I haven't got it yet but I hope it's not a giant coaster. image I was thinking more along the line of engraved, tooled or counterfeit. Looks really strange.

My first reaction was to wonder if it was a matte proof - but the edges don't look square enough for that. Then my next thought was - as we've heard here a lot - if it's real, and if it's that good, why isn't it in a slab? Guess it all boils down to who's selling it and how much of a gamble you're willing to take!

You may be right when I first looked at it I thought it was made out of aluminum, maybe counterfeit. If it is and you don't like it I'll take it off your hands.image

I agree with the "looks tooled" comment. Deatails go too deep. The surfaces look alterred.

It could be the DDO (double die obverse)! Which could explain the odd appearance!

    Hey thanks Russ!
Every time I decide to go look for T1s I get sidetracked on something else. I guess a Proof would be ok but I was hoping fake. Be my luck it's a normal coin with a bad scan.

I'll bite... why do you hope it is fake?

Because I was looking at 1913 T1s when I found it and I bid on it because it looked bad and I don't have any bad Buffalos so if it's not fake then I don't want it and should have just stayed looking at the T1s but they were all weak and this thing looked interesting.

Looks like a fake to me, do you think it is a cast fake or made some other way?

My first thought was that it looked like some of the modern engraved Hobo Nickels you see. My second thought was that it looked like a modern cast or maybe crude false dies.

Is it possible that the only thing wrong was it missed its baths before leaving the mint?(cleaning at the mint missed)

My initial impression is that this coin has been tooled. The major "details" are very prominent to the point of almost exclusion of the finer details which is a tipoff that the coin might have been tooled. Also the hip bone appears to show wear which is not consistent with the rest of the coin.

A look under greater magnification should confirm if the coin has been tooled. If it has, someone has gone to alot of effort. An interesting coin to own and examine!

Just another regular ole Buffalo. Not retooled or fake. The seller's lighting was weird and it made some shadows that made the coin depth look weird. Here's my scan of it:

Is the middle line in the feather on yours there but not picked up in your picture?
They look like different coins to me image

How does that vein thru the center of the feather look so bold in the original picture and in yours it dosen't even show up?

You said, I hope it's not a giant coaster. It does look like some pewter representation or something. Glad you actually got a real Buffalo nickel.

Placid the middle line in the feather is well defined my scan just doesn't show the depth because it was a straight on scan whereas the seller took his shot from the side which created shadows and more than normal looking depth. Notice the sellers coin is not round because of his angle.

Now that looks like a regular Buff image.

The unusual color and along with the angle of the photograph caused everyone to question the coin. The shadows in the original photograph made some of the features (especially the jaw) look out of wack.
