2020 Commemoratives delayed...

From Coin World:

2020 Basketball coins delay tied to colorization initiative

About the BBHoF coins:

For 2020, introduction of the three-coin Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coin Program is not yet scheduled, as research continues at the Philadelphia Mint on how to colorize the silver dollar and copper-nickel clad half dollar. The program also will offer a gold $5 coin that will not be colorized.

Mint officials have not disclosed how they plan to implement the colorization, whether through adjustments in the metallic composition to meet the designated color, or by a surface application, or with some other technique. Officials also have not disclosed what color or colors are planned to be used and whether the same color or colors will be used on both the dollar and half dollar.

About the Women’s Suffrage dollar:

The second 2020 commemorative coin program isn’t even posted on the Mint’s product calendar online yet, since the legislation authorizing the Women’s Suffrage Centennial silver dollar wasn’t signed into law by President Trump until Nov. 25, 2019, a month after the enabling legislation passed both houses of Congress.

smh. Well, my decision to to buy the 2020 commems may have been sealed. They may have been sealed for the 2021 commems as well.

The only thing that would convince me to get a BBHoF dollar is if they actually do it via a selective metalurgical process, not just applying color or just changing the color of the entire coin. (Like the rose gold commem.) The novelty of the curved coin died with the A11 commems, I think. Every world mint is producing them now.

We probably won't see the Women’s Suffrage dollar (and medal) until late spring/mid-year. Since President Trump signed Nov 25, we'll see just how fast the Mint can produce a coin when needed. The Mint will have less lead time on this coin than on the Innobuck.

Well, let's see what Ryder does in 2020 to make things more... interesting... :D

Start with a coin design, then add dates and mint marks, blend in some different precious metals, toss in a few new finishes, document with some COA's, slab with literally dozens of label varieties, now mix in a few different? colors!

I can imagine it now, mintage xxx, xxx, but x,xxx are randomly colored, with 100 of those with special signed COA's by all the top ten BB players they can pay to sign a few pieces of paper, and get ready for the hoop-fest, or the greatest coin hype-fest of all time?

I would have loved to see them re-issue the 1920 pilgrim half dollar as a .999 silver dollar but that’s not going to happen.

A limited edition of say 10,000 coins might get my attention. Otherwise, it's a pass on both.

Congress couldn't get a 400th anniversary coin done. Maybe Daniel Carr can step in.

Colored US Mint coins? I was done before but now I’m really, really, really, super-duper out. Gak!

Idk. My favorite coin of the last 10 years is still the Fiji bottle cap and that's enameled. Done right, I don't mind.

Didn't know you could quote yourself but I guess you can. :)

To add, I am sure the committee that is organizing the 400th anniversary festivities would be interested in including a private overstrike in their commemorative efforts. I have spoken with them previously on numismatic commems and they issued a medal themselves already. They were hoping for a coin but that didnt didn't happen.

It's about time that the US Mint joins the rest of the world with colorized examples of their products. If done correctly, I'm in for one of the baseball ones. This may spark the younger generations into the field of coin collecting. Rehashing old classics over and over again, sure didn't.

I bought the unofficial Pride of two Nations set from Australia with the Apollo 11 Commem domed coin which was colorized. Kinda cool I thought.

I would like to see a 2020 ASE special edition with 2020 struck, maybe in matte proof, something different.
The price $2020 dollars and 2020 customers picked randomly by the Mint. If one declines on to the next one and so on. No bots, no proxy servers, no scripts, no internet trickery, pure random selection. What do you guys think? Would you pony up $2020 for one of these?

The first 100 BBHoF should come with a mini basketball. Maybe delivered by a basketball player. Maybe random colors, no two coins alike. Perhaps made of a rubbery silver that bounces. (Coin may need to be inflated from time to time.)

Nah, they should come with a bag like the last time a "bbhof" coin was offered. I could use a supply of new bags.

(Hey, don't laugh, I'm still using those bags. They're becoming very worn, though.)

I have one too and I love it! But it's from Fiji. I hold the U.S. Mint to a higher standard that isn't going to be met. :/

I got this email from the mint. It looks like a silver coin but the 5$ Face value means it should be gold?

  • HemisphericalHemispherical Posts: 9,370 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes, the $5 is legislated as a gold coin. The ad is a bit off.

What is a "higher standard"? I just want coins that are fun and reasonably priced. It should be fun, y'know? That's why I like that Fiji coin. It is fun. It makes me laugh. It was only $30. It'll never be worth more than $30...well, until silver is like $200 per ounce...but it was FUN!

To me, the most interesting thing about US Mint products are the forum topics and posts generated.

I enjoy reading it, pro and con. The coins, well that's something else entirely.

  • kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭✭✭

The modern commemorative coin programs are selling fewer coins than the original series did. There’s some pretty neat coins, especially the silver dollars that can be picked up for under 30 bucks aftermarket with minimum downside.
