Please post your BIGGEST Die BreaK!
Collection #2597
Question: What would we expect the other side of the coin (opposite this break) should look like? Why?

Little to no detail in the design opposite the break, and a distorted design opposite the edge of the break, due to the massive metal flow into the void where the chunk of die is missing.

Assuming an unbroken reverse die, I would think the corresponding reverse to be either unstruck or weakly struck.

I have a very similar cud on a cent found in circulation, but mine has a date.
Adding: there is a rim on the coin even where the void is since the planchet went through the "upsetting" process to raise a rim before striking.
Not sure about the "distorted design opposite the edge of the break", though. I don't recall mine having that. Can you post pics of the whole reverse to show that here?

The top right corner of the Lincoln Memorial shows this, as does the rightmost column to a lesser extent.

Sorry, coin gone.
PS I've never heard about the "distorted design" characteristic before as in my view, no design is ever present.

I think we are having a difference of opinion on terminology only. To me, "the design opposite the edge of the break" refers to the design adjacent to the opposite side of the reverse (in this particular case), as in the Blakesly Effect on clipped coins.
From what you have described in the photos, though, it is actually a weakness in the design adjacent or closest to the unstruck area.

Another example ...

This is a much better example of the distortion I was talking about.

I took your original post to mean a distorted design in the void. LOL.

Unfortunately [or maybe fortunately] I spent my last 83,000+ hours of 'study' becoming an expert in another field.

That's great, and this is a "hobby" for you. My other hobbies do not deal with coins.

With a die break that big I have to wonder if the press operator could hear that something was wrong. I have to think that impacted the striking dynamic pretty significantly.

This one's got an "extra" error on it

This one is a combo die break and total die failure. One of my favorites.

@commoncents05 that is so cool! I’ve not seen anything like that.

Perhaps the coin posted in this discussion is another example of a "failure:" "Micrographs of an interesting coin."

Yeah perhaps.

Not sure whether this is a die break or not. See front of Ms. Liberty's breast.

Very impressive coins in this thread! Love the moderns as they somehow seem like they shouldn't escape with our newer minting processes!

When I think if die cracks, I think of this one from Ken Potter. It almost seems like you should take each 3rd and strike a medal with it

I have one of these but no pics of mine so I got this one from the bay, courtesy of rarecoincollector. This is one of most impressive die crack tokens to me because it looks like the die should not have even been able to create a strike. I imagine the die being held to together by rubber bands

Thanks, but ANYONE could do this. I have a reference book. The Large cent collectors keep this stuff in their heads!

The distortion effect makes it look like the Lincoln Memorial is getting sucked into a black hole!

This is the only 'defective' coin that I have

A die crack starts from the top of the V, shows between the first
and second digits of the date and extends to the inner border below
the second E.

Not sure if this qualifies, but it is the only die break (if a chip is indeed a die break) I have. I call it the Cumberbun 1996-D Washington. Found it in a mint set and have never seen another.

Great find. If it were me, though, I would have left it in the mint packaging.
