Leeroy- I love all 3 of them. You have definitely been hit by the gold bug. I don’t recall seeing (3) $20 gold Liberty’s in OGH’s with gold CAC stickers side by side. Your box of 20 is coming along slowly but surely.

What do you all think the grade is? Do you support the AU55 grade or think its higher?

Probably the 1874 is Unc., I don't see any real wear, but PCGS netted it down due to the bag marks, etc.. But probably not a 60 cac, but they would cac it as a 58.

If PCGS saw the coin as UNC, I believe they would have assigned it at worst an MS60 grade, no matter how baggy. I've never heard of "net grading" an UNC coin down to AU. If I'm incorrect, maybe someone can enlighten me.

The question is why did they grade it as a 55 at that time? You have very tough graders making market and grade assessments. Look at the ANA grading standards, they are subject to judgment calls. When the 1874 was graded there was little upside between AU55 and MS60. Market makers like Universal Coin started to market the Type II $20s in the later 90s.

One possibility is they saw rub on the coin that isn't readily apparent in those photos. This is definitely a scenario where it would have been nice to speak to CAC after the coin came back to find out if they thought it was AU58 or MS6X. If it were my coin, I'd be tempted to leave it as is whether I was keeping it long term or planning to sell. I guess Reconsideration could be an interesting option here, although if PCGS reassessed it as AU58, I would not want it reholdered! Don't know if they allow the submitter to specify a minimum acceptable upgrade, as I've never used the service myself.

At a coin show I sold an 1874 $20 with an "x" like mark to a FL dealer; later when I saw him again it was in a MS60 holder, I never thought it would straight grade.. I bought and later sold the coin again.

I’ve seen more than a few gold coins which looked to be unc./with no noticeable wear, but which were graded AU. The reason appeared to be an abundance of hits/obtrusive marks. I probably would have graded them MS60.

Thanks for the input. Not to get too far OT here, but I've seen several (old holder, non-gold) PCGS MS60 coins which had very few bag marks and excellent eye appeal. Never did solve that riddle. I almost bought a couple of them, but pricing was more like MS63 level.
