Not normally into these, but the anchor caught my attention.
This is a mechanical bank from the Suffolk Savings Bank for Seamen and Others. Here is what I know so far:
- There ARE coins in it
- The key is with it
- The bank was founded in 1833 and closed in 1933 (the depression?)
- The key is double-ended; one end to reset the amount and the other to open the back
The way it operated was you would put your coins into the slot on the side and operate the slide. Your coins would drop in and when it was full, you would take it to the bank where they would open the bottom, remove your coins and deposit them into your savings account, then they would insert the opposite end of the key in the top center to reset the counter to zero. The bank maintained the key so this is a very rare find.
I haven't opened it yet. I'd like to make a video of the opening and post it if I can get some advice. I am not tech savvy like that.

A KEEPER!
Hope it's two coins. Gold Eagle and 20c piece.
I'm charging the battery on my digital camera right now. THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME!!!
I have not seen a coin bank like it before.
That is a cool piece for sure.
Thanks for sharing it. Donato

That’s a good junk shop you have there!
Go back frequently if you can.
I’m guessing a few wheats and a world coin or two.
How in the world does something like that end up in a junk shop?
Super cool! Cant wait to see the contents!
I haven't the faintest. Still waiting for the battery to charge on my digicam.

Wow that's nice!
Very neat find! Hope it’s got something good and not just a few modern quarters someone threw in there...

Wow, a super find.... with possibilities if you are a gambler:
auction it off to the highest bidder.....unopened!
the old bank should be worth 500 any day... empty! just my guess.
Not only is it unusual it also appears to be in excellent operating condition.
What treasures await?
How do I add a video?
Really cool item.
Whoever says Coin Collecting is boring and dull!!!!! does not know what they are talking about.
What an interesting junk shop find. Even if the bank contains nothing but old washers (I doubt it) finding the bank, purchasing the bank, opening the bank and seeing what is inside is something that will add a little (maybe a lot) of joy to one's day.
The best thing is that Outhaul is sharing his adventure with forumites.
Looking forward to "The Rest Of The Story".
Easiest way probably is to upload to YouTube and then link it here. Interested to see what you find!

This is embarrassing. I feel like Geraldo...
I was close with the modern quarters... Still, a fun find! You should put some culls or low grade bulk silver in it for fun.
TurtleCat Gold Dollars
I knew it! But still cool....
Thats a little different than the popcorn eating Icon I remember from 15 years ago!
Tell Outhaul how to add a video? (I would have to be told too )
The junk shop owner knew how to guarantee the sale - visions of silver coins and buffalo nickels danced in my head.
Better than the dump.
My mother THREW AWAY all my toys. Including the big metal Spirit of Saint Louis airplane.
Shoulda seen the look on her face when I told her what it was worth.
My keen parole agent mind tells me someone has been in there after the bank closed.
I expected $10.20 worth. Your bank don't work.
It may not have been reset to zero by the previous users/depositors.

My anticipation was equal to that of the time George Plimpton opened the Andrea Doria safe!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
That was fun. Much more fun than when Geraldo opened Al Capone's vault.

Isn’t a nickel about the size of a $5 gold piece? And the pennies?.....
The difference is Outhaul's safe actually contained more money!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
@Outhaul .... Thanks for the video... and the anticipation of treasure. Cheers, RickO
Outhaul.
I’m buying a collection today with a little bank in it. Thought if this thread.
This one has been put up for quite some time and even the key was there. I think I’ll keep it together as found.
