My first two coins and the most important $4.95 I’ve ever spent
Back in my elementary school days, I read two parts of the Sunday paper: the comics and the ads. I’d also look through Parade magazine for more ads. Every few weeks I would see an ad for coins, and eventually I decided I had to get something. In third grade—some time in 1995-96–I but the bullet and bought this set for $4.95. It might not have been a great deal back then, and $5 was a lot of money for me, but these coins got me hooked on the history and beauty of coins. Whatever the case, it turned out to be a great investment. Beyond making me just a collector, the opportunities I’ve had to work in numismatics paid for my flight training and helped me save up for a down payment for my house. Plus, meet great people around the country and world, both in person and here.
Every once in a while I like to pull these two out and think about what they did for me. I only had my phone, so the color is a bit off, but there are perfectly original, grey coins. They’re very much in the permanent not for sale part of my collection, though maybe one day I’ll pass them along to get someone else started.

Great story - thanks for sharing it with us!
Jeremy, I don’t remember what year we first became acquainted, though my guess is that you do. Regardless of exactly when that was, I know it was more than a “few years” ago. 😉
Since that time, I’ve been extremely impressed with your growth as an uncommonly patient, discerning collector (and even more importantly) and as a fine, honorable young man. I’m proud to call you my friend.

Great story Jeremy... too bad we did not meet while we were both in the Seattle area.....I have long followed your posts here....Cheers, RickO
I’d pay $10 for the pair. Double your money! Think about it.

Thanks, Dex. I joined the boards October 2001. We first met at the 2003 Baltimore ANA, though we were certainly acquainted online before then. I have more than appreciated your safe advice over the years. Looking over my collection, I still know exactly which pieces came from you, and I’m holding onto all of them for the long haul.
Edit: I joined in 2001, not 2011

Nice!
Sure! Registered mail is fine. No need to fly it out yourself.

One of my uncles bought me the exact same Littleton set at around the same age [3rd or 4th grade], back when I was intrigued by coins but not yet all-in. It had a similar effect on me! Thanks for sharing.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
Hey Jeremy - you here way before 2011.
You had multiple cameo appearances on coinalot/clankeye foibles - and those where back in the early years.
I think Jeremy meant 2001. But it’s been so fun, it doesn’t feel nearly that long.😉

I'd have said the same but can't beat your writing it Mark .
Jeremy you were really just a kid when you came on board here, and you made an impression on everyone from day one. Wow how time flies.
This thread sure makes me feel old.
Me too!
Deal. Money is money.
You remember Coinalot! Cool
That's a cool story!

Awesome
I remember when you joined. You were one of the only members that could post good images of coins. As a young kid you were teaching the old folks how to image coins. Those were fun times.
I still have a lot of coins that you imaged for Mark.
Jeremy is definitely one of the good guys - great story.
