Someone confirmed this coin was a struck counterfeit by cutting into the edge (test cut) to reveal its copper core. There is a better way to test a coin - specific gravity - so as not to damage a coin that may be genuine.

What coin is that? The rim looks rather crude not unlike the rim found on an ancient coin.

Such a shame that people unknowingly damage what could be a valuable coin.... Excellent picture too... Cheers, RickO

Maybe they tested the coin other ways and then cut into it to confirm or prove to the owner of it.

Checking to see if there is a plating and to get at the core.

Definitely damaging the coin.
Thinking someone (non-collector) was just “checking” and did not care for any numismatic value.
