When a no reserve auction with 41 bidders ends...

CoinstartledCoinstartled Posts: 10,135 ✭✭✭✭✭

And the winner has only placed one bid, how many participants have been outbid?

40 or 1?

Just lost an Ebay auction by a few increments. I figure it was the highest underbidder that got outbid.

For me, 40 bidders were outbid since the winner had to bid more than each of them.

If one only wants to count unknown, bidders, I would say timing is needed, for example, if 10 bid in the past few seconds but 30 bid the previous day, then one could say the winner had to outbid 10. That being said, I'm still in the 40 camp ;)

Think about it this way, if you have the pole position in a NASCAR race and win, did you beat 0 cars ;)

But the winner only had to outbid one of them.

Moe and Jerry are out in the Serengeti one afternoon. A hungry tiger begins to chase them. Moe takes off and Jerry is right behind him. Jerry yells, "this is insane, you can't outrun a tiger." Moe turns around and says "I know, but I just have to outrun you."

Was the winner the first bidder or the last

  • ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,401 ✭✭✭✭✭

In the case of coins, if you only outbid one underbidder and outbid the wrong one, you lost ;)

Great question. Let's place him in the middle.

If someone saw the auction, was interested, but saw that the current bid was above his maximum....was he a bidder?

    Yes, this! Best answer.

If I place a nuclear bid up front, then I have outbid the ENTIRE WORLD!

Works better in a live auction where you can actually jump the bid and intimidate THE WORLD into dropping their paddles!

Forty participants have been outbid. Otherwise, one of them would now own the coin.

  • davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,697 ✭✭✭✭✭

look at bid history and see - were there 40 bids or 40 bidders lower than the highest?

The winner has outbid all the other bidders. Period.

So let's say that you place the opening minimum bid. Have you been outbid one time, by the next bidder or 40 times by all the bidders?

There is a difference between 'bids' and 'bidders'...there may have been only three bidders... two competing for forty bids and one final bidder....details, details... :D;) Cheers, RickO

I believe the answer is 42, congrats!

Edit to add: Number could change depending if the seller was shill bidding their own item.

The title of the thread states that there were 41 bidders.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

@CoinJunkie...Yes... However, I considered that might have been an editorial oversight since rarely, in an auction with that many bids, are all bids from different participants....Cheers, RickO

That is a distinct possibility, in which case the thread is "much ado about nothing". Which probably means it's good for another week on page 1........... >:)

    You are a hitman.

    There are 40 other hitmen.

The 40 battle it out, and only one is left alive.

You kill that hitman, but are arrested.

Are you charged with 40 counts of murder or just one?

OK, you are driving the #151 bus down US-41, Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago.
When you turn on to LSD at Hollywood there are 13 passengers on the bus.
When it stops at Oak St. 3 people get on and 5 people get off.
When it stops at Chicago Ave. 7 people get on and 2 people get off.
When it stops at Ohio St. 4 people get on and 8 people get off.
When it stops at the Wrigley Building nobody gets on and 5 people get off.
How old is the bus driver?

The correct answer is the age of the person you are telling this riddle to, since “you” are driving the bus.

The winner put in a nuclear bid. He simply outsmarted them - probably on AS.
