Storing and Displaying your collection?

I don't have a large collection but like to display some of it-mainly my gold and silver commemoratives. Here is how I display it.

The trays are made of vinyl covered wood with foam and felt lining. The slip covers were custom made to hold the trays. I have slip covers that hold 4, 3, and two trays that can be mixed and matched according to the collection displayed. They all just slide into the slip case and into the safe when not in use. Please show the ways you display your collections.

I use Lighthouse Grande (slab albums), four and six page (36 and 54 slab capacity), and for smaller sets, Eagle two page slab album (18 slab capacity). I wish Lighthouse would make a two page Grande slab album, as I like that brand better.

I wish I was comfortable displaying mine openly. Instead they're locked up and I enjoy them through pictures.

I do not have a special display method... I just pull out the coins I want to see from the safe....or the less valued pieces from the coin cabinets....I do not have many visitors - other than family, and most of them are not interested, (except for one nephew)...so no real need for fancy displays. Most raw coins are in coin albums, Whitman, Littleton, Intershield, Dansco and some are in rolls, tubes, etc. Slabs are in PCGS/NGC boxes and some in Eagle slab books. And all of those are either in a SDB or safe.

@mrcommem Have the toned coin deepened and white coins toned or remained stable in those trays?

It's a nice way to store and display, just wondering if there's been any chemical interaction from the adhesive used.

I use these intercept double protection boxes for my Seated and Trade dollar sets. A fairly inexpensive way to store and protect a collection. Only downside is it’s not the most compact method to store a collection. I am able to store 11 per box which helps a bit.

So I got this a bit ago and had to beef up the handle cause it got heavy. I put most of my Raws into 2 X 2 snaps and these are made for them. But I like it have not had that much time to experiment but you can see it’s potential. I really like these.

I’d be afraid the handle would pop off and dropping the case. What did you do to reinforce the handle @Gluggo?

I purchased one of those wrap around velcro straps with a strong handle work pretty good. I cut it to size, and she works fine. But its very heavy right now about 10 pounds.

To be honest....I've found few occasions when I feel the urge to "display" at all! The wife and a few friends and family members just roll their eyes if I pull even one out.

So, cardboard boxes seem to fill my needs.

I bought this case from Zohar. I like it but it's not very fire resistant. It does, however, fit in the safe.

Two more still in the case.

I have had the coin in these trays for twenty years without any additional toning. I did have some antitarnish strips on them while they are in the cases.

I do not display my coins. In fact, after I have purchased, examined and admired them, they are secured. I will examine them from time to time. Otherwise, I am just content knowing that I have them.

I am a really big fan of the PCGS Registry album setup. This example below has TrueView photos, and the US Mint medals are shown in their relative sizes from 22-76mm. Click on a medal and full size is shown for each including the certificate details and you can page thru the selections full size for each page of the album.

In my opinion this is one of the best things PCGS ever did for displaying Registry sets.

A couple of pages from my Eagle coin books. Great for displaying slabbed coins. One book will hold 3 pages easily for a total of 27 slabbed coins.

I love both sides of this design, and the dark vibe of the NGC obverse contrasting with the Rainbow reverse of the PCGS called to mind the Bible verse “weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Those words fit with the trials of the establishment of Plymouth colony IMO, so it made sense having these two in their own display with this orientation.

I use this system too only I buy the double row box. I believe it is SL-50 and stores 4x the amount of coins than the image shown. I also add a piece of paper that I tape on top of the box so I can quickly identify the specific coins inside. That system works pretty well for me.

Interesting this topic came up when I just found this display that I had forgotten about just a week ago. I got this back in 2004. It was made by a company called Solid-Craft and they made them custom. This one is walnut with 7 PCGS frames that I intended for my Liberty Head Half-Eagle set, one example of each mint mark.

In the end, as beautiful as it was, you sadly just can't leave this out to enjoy. I just put some coins in it to take the pics and discovered the latest generation PCGS slab doesn't fit in the frames. BUT I figured out that with a minor alteration I think I can make it work.....

I'd like to display my coins and have often thought about doing I, but because of the value I can't get myself to do it. I keep mine if a safe and inside of a PCGS box of 20 and pull them out every few days to look at them.

Medals go in trays raw. Type coins (slabs) are grouped in wooden boxes of 2+. For instance I have a display box of three Barber proofs, a display box of draped bust type, etc. For series, I keep them in a typical box of twenty or more, not displayed.

For my best non slabbed coins they are mostly in Capital, Dansco and LOC albums.

Here is the display case with the handle beefed up now I can load this. I think it had 10 trays. At least I won’t have to worry about snapping off the handle now.

I have had most of the coins for over twenty years. They have not changed color while being stored in their trays and boxed.

That’s great! One of my friends has coins on display in a curio cabinet in his living room.

It seems like most people here don’t display their coins openly like that.

Let them sleep in the Safety Deposit Box (SDB)

It makes selling the coins and cards easier as well... both technically and emotionally... unattached..

For this approach, I wonder if it’s a small step to just collecting TrueViews and not needing the coins.

I mostly in it for the deal and flip and the hunt.

I have an appreciation for cubist art, WWI artist, etc... stuff I could never collect.

Is it any different than a curator or art historian? Probably a topic for another thread. (thinking Currin)

These are what I use for my best stuff. The tray slides into a clear, rigid plastic sleeve. I have 151 coins in 17 individual trays. The inserts are bright red, wine red, and deep blue velour.

Abafil sells this 12 tray slab box, which is by far the best quality product in the market. I have a couple of them. I also have some custom made cases that fit six trays each. And some custom made 9 coin trays, which I store in clamshell boxes. The system takes twice as much SDB space as PCGS slab boxes, but it's way more satisfying to visit the coins when displayed this way.
