I guess I'm missing something. Why do you think it's fake? Common date/mm and worth very little...
At the very least, it would be extremely unusual for a business strike Mercury dime to be a Cameo PL. At first glance, the coin looks genuine (though I’ve never seen a genuine one that looks like that) - I’d sure like to see it in hand!

Mark I want to see it in hand also. Never have seen a Merc like this. Maybe its junk but maybe it is not.

Best of luck, Ken. Hopefully, the images are true to life. It’s so unusual looking, it’s hard to believe it’s genuine, but I’m trying to be objective.

Have fakes reached a new level of expertise? This coin needs to be researched. It looks like no other circulation strike Mercury dime I have ever seen so far as the cameo effect is concerned.
I think it is dremel practice, but hope I'm wrong. Some of his other material is fake. His 1900 Morgan is a fake. Didn't look at the rest of his stuff.

Denver mint ms Jefferson 5c with cameo PL reverses exist for several dates 1981-1986. Excess unused pr 5c dies were apparently shipped from SF mint and used for ms coinage in Denver. Best place to find them is in mint sets.
Looks like the seller has obtained a group of high quality fakes... hadn't seen ones like those before. Intentional? Non-intentional? The seller does have good feedback.
He has just posted another Merc... a 1937... that shows the same characteristics of an odd mouth, along with a really thin date... but does not have the proof like surfaces:

Unfortunately, good or even excellent feedback, can be highly misleading. I’ve seen many bad sellers with wonderful feedback. That’s often due to unknowledgeable buyers being happy with what they mistakenly think are bargain purchases. The buyers who do learn what they’ve actually bought are allowed to return the items, so that the sellers can maintain their high feedback ratings.

Mark, as I look at some of the sellers past auctions... he has certainly been selling quite a few more of these mercs... all with the same characteristics. Includes dates of 1931-D, 23-S, 24-S, 39-D and more. And what appear to be some fake morgans.
I paid 9 bucks just to see this coin or whatever it is. It shows being shipped so sometime next week I can take pictures and report about the coin. I think I see something wrong with the hair on miss liberty. In hand will tell for sure.
One thing I will say, along the lines of don't say anything negative if you are going to comment on a seller, is that he at least has decent hand etiquette and clean fingernails.
Agree with others, fake.
My initial reaction was that liberty looked weird.
Speaking of good fakes... who remembers the Morgan that the barucci/jm.bullion person posted several months ago that they claimed was a branch mint proof and wouldn’t accept proof that it was fake for a long time?

I think it is a good roll of the dice.
Since they mainly sell stamps, it is possible they have funky lighting and camera setup.
I think the coin is a genuine (normal) UNC 1943-D dime that was perhaps cleaned and then the devices were artificially matted (like a "California Cameo" Morgan Dollar of the 1980s).

I have an 85-D proof-like both sides. I'd like to see an example with a cameo reverse......send through messenger.
The earliest proof-like Denver mint in a 1940-D but no frost. The PL 51-S I have has scant frost. Moreso on a 1964-D. Last 3 coins are displayed in my collection below.
Tough luck Ken......the least, a fake anomaly.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

I think the '80-D has the most common highly PL and cameo reverse. Later dates like the '86-D come more PL but less cameo usually. There are exceptions to every rule.
I haven’t read the entire comments, responses, but let me say this. When imaging coins in these stapled flips the cellphone can cast a shadow over the coin just enough to make it look like it is much nicer than the coin will be in hand, yes even a cameo appearance like this one. If the seller is not going to take the time to take the coin out to image it properly, I’m not looking at it. You cannot judge a coin properly behind cellophane. Cellophane also does an outstanding job hiding hairlines.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
The seller is offering a 1937 Mercury for $12. that if genuine would grade MS68. Sadly though, it isn't real. I've seen a few of these scattered about that look good with the 'tell' usually being the placement and style of the date. Fun novelty item though for the OP as long as he's comfortable knowing he isn't alone in owning one like it.
I agree with the majority that the Merc is a fake....I got here late in the conversation, but enlarging the images, it almost has a 3D look... This, in addition to the mint mark and condition, indicate problems. Cheers, RickO

Where would the Denver Mint get a Proof Die set from? they didn't make proofs at Denver. Nice pick up!
I don't like something about how Miss Liberty's lips are pursed.
I smell some chow-mein on this one.
That is neat Ken! Hope it is real and is what you think it is. I've never seen a cameo proof Merc...much less a MS one.
I'm guessing it was altered by polishing the fields.
Would love to see it in hand.

Unless the pictures are really bad, the coin doesn’t look polished. And even if it were, that, alone, wouldn’t account for the cameo devices.

My guess would be altered surfaces or not genuine. Better photos might help narrow it down.
I know it is that time of year but I have heard somewhere before "there is no Santa Clause in numismatics"
This other coin from the same seller, dampens my enthusiasm:

Upon review of sellers sold & current listings I think it is a fake.
Edited to add: Sellers 1882 O & 1888 S should be reported and removed.

One big tell is the D has no/very small serifs, which is the same mintmark as used on the fake 31-d he sold.
Fake. I have handled multiple cameo proof Mercury dimes and at least a dozen PL Mercury dimes. The instant coin doesn't compare to any of those.
