Today's circ. find

mannie graymannie gray Posts: 7,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

Certainly not earth shattering, and it has been knocked around a bit, but if I had found this when I was a kid, I would have been bouncing off the walls!
Maybe that's why I still look -- to attempt to recapture that boundless youthful enthusiasm.
All right, enough self-examination already.πŸ™„

107 year old coin in circulation, pretty good!

I'm not perfectly certain, but the United States of America might be the only nation on this earth where a 107 year old coin could still plausibly circulate.

It is certainly one of the few but there are others. For example Switzerland hasn’t changed most of their coins since the 1880s and Canada. I can’t think of any others right now, but I’m sure there’s more.

I thought about Switzerland the second after I posted about Canada.

Nice circulation find.... I often find older cents in circulation... Usually '30's and '40's....Once in a while the '20's...I pull any I see in the 'take a cent, leave a cent' tray...Cheers, RickO

Heck, I just dump the contents of those trays into my pockets.
Am I not supposed to? :#

@mannie gray ....Well, that does sound a bit extreme.... :D Though when people see me searching the tray, they do give me strange looks...Cheers, RickO

Judging by the extreme wear on Swiss minors and the lack of any design change I'd guess there are still quite a few 10 and 20 r coins dating back to the 1880's circulating there.

The 1912 has not been in continuous circulation. Every wheat cent has been pulled from circulation numerous times since about 1964 but many find their way back into "circulation".

Oh I agree that is hasn't been circulating since before WW1.
Old coins like this sometime show up around Christmas time when jars get dumped.

Awesome find! Thinking it’s been hiding for a bit and luckily found by a collector.

I think of coins in jars getting dumped to already be in circulation... ...especially cents since they spend more time in jars than changing hands. I think a distinction here is important; the jar that got dumped which contained this coin was probably "normal" in all other ways. It didn't come from a collection or an accumulation of old coins in all probability unless the owner intentionally released some old coins for some reason.

Canada has been actively removing older, nickel, coins from circulation. Not very likely you would get something older than the 1960s in Canada now. The couple of times I have been in Canada in the past few months most of the coins are now the rolled steel thingies Switzerland hasn't changed its rappen denominated coins since the 1880s, so while not an everyday occurrence it is possible to find a 100 year old coin circulating.

I’m surprised no one noticed it an MPL in VG. ;-)

I usually don't find much but this was interesting enough to note.
