I completed this purchase with finalization of some consignment proceeds last night. I am very excited to see this in hand.

    That coin is not ugly. ;)

    I can't conceive that the collecting public would value a modern chunk of bullion similarly to a classic beauty like this.

    It took the proceeds from 15 coins to pay your property taxes? You must have a very nice house. In the area I live in, that would cover a multi-million dollar mini mansion.

    Excellent point yet I wonder out loud if the same couldn't be said of this coin back in 1879 from Numismatists who only collected coins prior to 1800?

    Well, every coin was a modern at some point....... but I sincerely doubt any newly minted coins in 1879 were selling a week later for 20 times their issue price. ;)

    Thank you everybody. I had to pay through the nose for this coin relative to any comparisons I could find, but given the old holder, CAC sticker, and overall jaw dropping quality of this coin, I bit the bullet. I have no regrets, especially after seeing the reaction it has garnered here.

    I wish I could take pictures like this! These are the pictures taken by the dealer who sold me the coin. I saved them off the eBay listing before he took it down. I should probably ask him if he offers his photography services, now that I am thinking about it.

    Also, there a a ton of amazing photographers here on this forum that offer affordable photos. I'd take them up here rather than a stranger on ebay if you're looking for quality pics.

    Stranger is a strong word, I have done a lot of business with him already. Part of my payment for this came via a consignment he sold on eBay for me, for example. I dare say the photographers here are more strangers to me than he is. :)

    Interesting point. I wonder how much the manufacturing process is taken into account. Apart from design considerations, I like classic coins because they tend to have more character. On the subject of Silver Eagles, look at the Walking Liberty Half. It's the same design, but I like the walker way more because of things like lustre/die flow that a business strike has over the highly perfected, sterile appearance of more modern (particularly, noncirculating) pieces. The design is great on both, and the Silver Eagle is one of the moderns I do generally like, but the circulating version is the one I prefer. You could argue the minting process improved from 1800 to 1880, but many properties an 1800 coin would have, the 1880 would have as well.

    Common date n mm, with a not so common look. Looks like the obverse is full blown dmpl and the reverse is outer limits pl. Nice pick up.
