A FedEx package being shipped from California to Texas has been reported lost/stolen.
The package contained the following coins:

Reckless faith in the dollar's strength is reckless. Tariff proposals have demonstrated this.
This stuff must be targeted. Shippers don't lose all that many packages.
There's a good chance these coins have been cracked out so they are more difficult to identify.

This is the first time I have heard of numismaticcrimes.org. It's sad that there is a need for such an organization, but it's good to know that they are there to push back against crime.
Is FedEx the best way to ship a high value group of rare coins?

It's a shame to hear about all the counterfeits that are discussed here and an armed robbery at a coin store and other crimes mentioned at numismaticcrimes.org. Years ago, I visited a coin shop in the New Orleans area. The owner had a sawed-off shotgun ready for any crook who happened to pick his store.

I use USPS registered. Antiquated and clunky but the security seems to be exemplary.
Yup, USPS Registered mail. That's what I use. But I still try to make the package as low key as possible.
Some insurers require overnight shipping. Registered mail is out of the question for that sort of service.
I’m not familiar with such requirements from major insurers in our industry.

I wonder how many people knew about the Package being shipped? Did the shipper tell the counter person there were valuable coins in this box? Everybody is a suspect. I would start with the guy in the front counter. What city did it make it to? Then FLY DOWN THERE INTEROGATE EVERY PERSON ONE ON ONE. Find out where the Fed Ex Employee lives and pay them a visit at night. Those employees know who the bad guys are. Once you find the bad guy YOU ASSUME HE IS GUILTY AND GIVE HIM THE FULL TREATMENT TILL YOU GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH!

I was incomplete in my previous reply. At least one insurer requires (or required) overnight shipping for packages exceeding a certain value ($25,000, I think). Registered mail was okay for packages valued less. This was true in the past, I can't say for sure about today. I worked for a coin dealer and was responsible for shipping. I do not know the name of the insurance company.

Fedex is the worst shipper compare with USPS and UPS.
Friend of mine had a Fed Ex return from England. The antique radio arrived in pieces. FedEx told him to get a repair estimate. He got an estimate that said it was totaled. Fed Ex asked him if he could ship it back to them immediately. He said, it's right here at my feet. They said, never mind, we'll cut you a check. That was the extent of their investigation. I think it's just easier to pay the insurance.
Sadly, they have seemed to slip quite a bit in recent years. They used to easily be the best.
Are you joking? I had a package stop moving, and I got updates like every 6 hours as they investigated, spoke to people, found the issue, fixed it, and moved it on.
Plus they refunded my shipping cost.
But then again, my experience is limited as I spend only about $17,000 a year with FedEx and ship 6 days a week.
FedEx has such a low number of packages turning up stolen statistically the theft rate is zero.
I think this is basically true of a the shippers. Unfortunately, when 1 in 10,000 goes missing, it gets all the news.

It gets the news when it is $50k or so worth of coins (I didn't add up the inventory.)
Seems that of the higher value coin shipments the MIA rate is higher than 1 in 10,000. Maybe 1 in a 1000 is acceptable to the insurers. We will never know the real number.
I doubt it's that high. No one reports the packages that make it through.
Not exactly on topic, but highly relevant to those of us who get packages delivered.
A study was done recently about package theft, after delivery was made. They look like they're using Amazon as their primary shipper, but the survey looks like it was just package delivery in general.
Of the 2000 surveyed, 36% had a package stolen in the past year. Of those 36%, 44% had at least two stolen.
That's an incredible theft rate.

I've had two packages stolen in the past year. One was a dashcam. The other was toilet paper. I hope it was put to good use. Both were replaced with minimal hassle, but this has to be costing merchants a bundle...
I saw that study. It is interesting that the shippers (and Amazon) don't change the mode of delivery. At some point, it must eat into profits.

What does it cost to insure a $50k package of gold sent by Fedex overnight?
That might give an indication of the loss rate.
When it comes to shipping high value coins I have always used USPS Priority Mail Express. I know it's costly but I have not yet experienced any problems. Just what I do.
It is unfortunate that such behavior seems to ultimately ruin all message boards. I initially thought this board was an exception, but it has become clear that it's not.
For packages of value, I use USPS Registered.... I have never had a problem. Yes, it is slow, but it gets there. Cheers, RickO
