WEYERS CAVE COIN SHOW REPORT SVCC COIN SHOW.

So this weekend was the svcc coin show or the Shenandoah valley VA coin show in weyers cave VA. the show was Friday, sat and Sunday. Normally the show is next weekend but had to be pushed forward due to scheduling issues.

Most of the dealers were worried about the show starting on "black Friday" and being on thanksgiving weekend. but i must say the shows best day was in fact Friday. I was busy from open at 9am to around an hour before closing at 5pm.

some points i noticed this weekend that interest folks here........

---silver was trading for 12 times face for 90%
---from the dealers i spoke to an myself, peace dollars are dead.
---most dealers were done shows for the year but said it had been a decent year for them
---the dealers that were not "doing well or had a bad show" had very stale inventory. Ive been asking one dealer about a 77 Indian for 5 years and his price is still 4 times retail because "that what he has in it"
---proof and mint sets were for sale from multiple dealers to the public for 25-35% back of bid
---Morgans, buffalo nickels, and wheat cents were on top of a lot of want lists from the collectors i helped this weekend. most didn't want unc but wanted nice circ grades from 35 to 50

Saturday started slow and continued to be slow until around noon. for some reason from noon to about 330 there was a steady group of customers and collectors come thought the door. Saturday ended up being very good even though there was a dismal start to the day.

Sunday.......... well it was a Sunday. It wasn't very good not many people through the door and for a 9-3 show most dealers were packing at 12:30.

I did see a few younger people interested in coins at the show which is nice. I also saw 2 different 1893 s Morgans in holders that were both fake. 2 different people had these coins in pcgs holders and both were horrible fakes. i guess if there has to be fakes out there i would rather have horrible fakes then good ones.

The lions club provides the food at the show and it is good! holy moly the salty ham or country ham sandwiches are sooooooo good!

Its a nice little show i look forward to 2 times a years.

so yea there is my report! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving

Nice show report. It is not surprising to me that Friday was the best day as a lot of people have the day after Thanksgiving off or take the day off. I would have gone if I had a local show on Friday as I was off from work as I am every year.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks. I'm glad I quit the local monthly coin shows years ago. If I went back I'd bet the same dealers would be in the same spots with the same coins.

@COINS MAKE CENTS....Thanks for a very good show report...That news about fake Morgans in holders is distressing... were the holders fake as well? I just cannot see our hosts making such a mistake with 'horrible fakes'...so assume the holders were fake too. Cheers, RickO

@COINS MAKE CENTS....Thank you for the clarification... Though I was sure that was the case, I wanted it clear that our hosts did not package them. And thanks again for your report...Cheers, RickO

Now I am hungry for country ham!

Thanks for the report, glad the show went well for y'all. Speaking of ham, one of my patients is bringing me a homemade, country smoked ham tomorrow. Should be even better after hanging in the cold attic for a couple more months.

---. Ive been asking one dealer about a 77 Indian for 5 years and his price is still 4 times retail because "that what he has in it"

    Nice report.

Your comment about the dealer's 1877 Indian caught my attention because this response is so common from a dealer and it annoys me to no end.

For me, I can only think of three plausible reasons for this response:

    1) the dealer is outright lying and paid a whole lot less than what is stated and just wants to make a killing on the sale.

    2) the dealer realizes the market stinks, but is thinking more like a 'collector' and has a difficult time selling his 'beloved' 1877 penny. Only if he can get a windfall for it, then he will sell it.

    3) the dealer is clueless about operating a business and doesn't realize 'turnover' is important and it's OK to sell a coin at a loss. It's like owning 100 different stocks and if ten lose money but 90 make you money then you're still OK at the year's end. Some dealers just don't understand this.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm tired of hearing this excuse from dealers year after year after year.
