I was surprised that nobody brought the subject up yesterday. November 22, 1963. I'm getting old. 56 years is a long.....long time ago. People forget. Still..... It was A DAY TO REMEMBER. I remember it.
At approximately four and one-half years old, I don't remember peoples' reactions to the event. But I remember seeing the funeral on a large black and white television. I distinctly remember seeing the horse pulling the caisson with the casket, and that made a big and lasting impression. I lived on a farm and it had probably been worked by horses 30 years earlier, but horses were quite uncommon by 1963. And I distinctly remember seeing a single long television view of the White House and its driveway on the Pennsylvania Avenue side (driveway on the side closest to the Treasury Building). I had very little understanding of what had occurred, but there were a few days when daily life was disrupted slightly. Normally, my parents did not turn the television on during the daytime, not until evening.
To keep it Numismatic, I was able to acquire a Gold Kennedy widget earlier this year:
@privatecoin ....Nice AH Kennedy..... I have the run of Kennedy halves up to about 2009 or 2010.... stopped after that except for (I think) one or two special issues...I have several AH's though....Cherry pick them when available...Cheers, RickO
I also remember as @BillDugan1959 does. Shamefully the biggest thing I remember was not being able to watch cartoons because the funeral was on every channel.
My deepest apologies, Kennedy was shot in the 22nd my goof. I'm not buying what the Gov't is selling, I'll keep it to that. How many U.S. notes were printed? It was just 1's 5's and 10's correct? Why did the Mint decide to go with 3/4 of an oz. for the 2014W? I feel a full oz. would have been a better tribute. .75 is insulting imo.
The medal below is a well executed design, love it.
I guess I'll never forget that day. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard about it. (Lunchroom in elementary school).
At one time I collected them but I gave it up many years ago when they were taken out of general circulation. Still have several rolls of circulated 64's.
Do I believe the official government story about what happened? Heck no. I've been to the 6th floor museum in Dallas several times in the past few years and walked the plaza many times. (really well done museum and preserved area) Also been to his grave site a couple of times and and seen the eternal flame at Arlington. Really very interesting and memorable, especially when you lived through those times.
Having grown up in Dallas and being a teenager when President Kennedy was assassinated, I feel a special bond with the Kennedy halves and used to have a top-ranked Registry Set. It was 56 years ago today that Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. They let us out early from junior high after the news spread about the murder and death of the President, and I called my Mom who worked at Shaw's Jewelry downtown and had seen the motorcade scant minutes before the coward struck. I asked her if I could come downtown and she fairly shouted, "No! You keep your @$$ home!"
I used to watch movies in the theater in Oak Cliff where Oswald was apprehended after shooting Officer Tippit.
I remember it all like it was yesterday. And Dallas got a very bad rap for a long time after ... some, not all, of it undeserved.
Just so happened to be in Dallas on 11/22/19, so I made time to go to Dealey Plaza and fulfill a dream of mine. Like so many others, the assassination has always captivated me. Going to the 6th floor of the Texas Schoolbook Depository Building is a moving experience. It is now a museum. Below are some photos from my trip:

In 1983, a very fine gentleman drove me through Dealey Plaza several times in a beautiful Cadillac Eldorado convertible. Yes, the top was down. I sat in the same seat that Governor Connally would have sat in.
I have to give my gentlemanly acquaintance much credit, because when you drive the direction that the Presidential motorcade was headed, you apparently must exit the Plaza. Not easy to get turned back around. Still, this gentleman drove me through the Plaza three times. Very eerie. Lots of places that gunmen might have been. It was an unforgettable afternoon.
I too have been to Dealy Plaza. A most surreal experience. Like history coming alive. Strange to see the white "X" marking the fatal shot spot. Went behind the stockade fence. Took a walk on the overpass as well. A Belgian TV station was filming a documentary on the tragedy. I was interviewed by the makers. They asked me on camera for my thoughts of the event.

I was in 3rd grade - our teacher broke the news and had us do the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem. Won't ever forget that day or the aftermath.

That is a great museum. My favorite thing to do when I go to Dealy is to stand on the exact spot Zapruder filmed from, and watch the Zapruder film on Youtube on my phone, matching the camera movement. It's amazing how little the Plaza has changed since 11/22/63.

I think it was 11/22. I hope politics do not become an issue on this thread. Good thought and should bring out some nice stuff.

It happened 3 years BEFORE I was born but I can only IMAGINE the impact that it had on this nation. No president was EVER so loved and respected.
56 years ago yesterday,..

I wasn’t born yet (1975) but I prefer cars from the 60s and the music wasn’t too shabby either.

I remember too... 'exactly where I was,' etc.

I was five years old when he was assassinated, I don't remember too much other than my parents were very sad.

Born in '67 I was not around yet. The earliest national tragedy I remember was Elvis in '77 then the Challenger in '86.
RIP JFK.
I remember that day as a kid. I could not comprehend now people could be that mean at my early age. Better days ahead.

Two things if that date(11-22-63) never happened. #1. John maybe would still be with us? and #2. Franklin Halves would still be Minted! Just my guess.
