100% White

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 9,327 ✭✭✭✭✭

I love these old PCI holders. I saw this one last week and had to have it.
I think it's more like a nice 63 but it's close enough that it doesn't bother me too much.

Apparently, most people are unaware that “100% white” refers to the holder’s core, not the coin.

    Attempt at humor? Enlighten us.

This one continues to turn. Reminds me to send it in and get it out of this holder.

Nothing worse than a once white coin that now has the nasty, especially AT nasty.

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Perhaps PCI gave your Morgan a point bump (from MS63 to MS64) due to the colorful rim toning?

Since it was slabbed as “100% white”, that’s quite unlikely.

Good but your timing was just a bit off.

Other than the colorful rim toning (obverse only!) it is "100% white". Does white mean untoned? If not, PCI got it right.

    “100% white” should mean color/toning-free.

Maybe, yet keep in mind based on the generation of PCI slab this one was graded late 1980's. PCI may have had a different interpretation of what either "100%" is or what "white" is.

Nice coins (both the Morgan and the Eagle)!
These slabs are known to produce some spectacular toners.

    Holder not air tight?
Either from a defect or on purpose.

It's widely believed that it's due to the chemicals in the white plastic that holds the coin inside the slab.

It is likely the tarnish is produced by the slab and not the external atmosphere....So many of these PCI coins tarnish in the slab. Cheers, RickO

I started working at PCI in 1990. At that time and decades before "white" was the preferred color for silver coins. Within a year or two the owner of the company decided to have us put the percentage of "white" on the label for dollars and SE. I recall some 75% white Morgans' were slabbed. NO 100% white coins had any color.

NO GRADE BUMP was given for eye-appeal or toning. PCI was the first TPGS to slab problem coins. We were so strict that dealers would come up to the table to tell me they loved or "problem coins" because they could buy them dirt cheap, crack the coin, and have them straight graded by other TPGS! That's because we had no clue about "market acceptability."

Absolutely. No one knew what would occur over time.
