Natural toned or artificially toned

Just looking to see what every bodies opinions are on this coin I came across the other day. Not what I'd call attractive, but interesting to me and made me wonder how it might have wound up looking like this.

    At least wash the sulfur off. Artificially toned.

    Almost certainly AT. It would make little difference since the toning is ugly.

    I thought it had the look of an auto toned coin, but I'm not very familiar with the process, natural or otherwise. It seems like the naturally toned coins kind of start around the edges and develope more color inward if the coin stays in the environment that's inducing the oxidation
    or whatever it is.

    Every toning experience I've had with my coins, whether it be in an album(Dansco) or just sitting out in the air and light the toning always starts at the edge and remains darker at the edge until fully toned. And no I do not dip coins or treat them with anything. If there is such thing as natural toning this would be it. Just exposure to indoor atmosphere and time.

    I'm not sure I would call it AT so much as environmentally damaged. It isn't natural/market acceptable toning either. I don't think this was intentional but is the result of incidental exposure to something else.

    Agreed. The AT/NT/MA/ED debate is purely academic as it is only worth face value.

    Tarnished....Environmental damage... Whether dark or rainbow colors, still tarnish, still damage...and this one is ugly. Cheers, RickO

    It can "naturally" corrode like that if it is in a harsh environment. AT or NT really doesn't matter. No one is paying over 50 cents for that coin.
