1958 is a MUCH harder date to find in circulation.
Your coin likely had an improper alloy mix to begin with, and has maybe suffered some light corrosion along the way.
No real value above face, but a very rare circulation find.

Maybe it's just from being handled over time ?

The nickel gives the appearance (somewhat) of an improper annealing... “sintered.” IMO

Disagree with handling. But thanks for a thought! Jim night
Did research in minutes and found improper annealing planchet. Thanks to Hemispheric!

Check the edge. If it's the same dark color as the coin, then it's likely to be environmental damage. If the edge has the coloration of a normal nickel, then it could be struck on an improperly annealed planchet. (I learned this trick from an old Fred Weinberg post)

Probably improperly annealed (as mentioned above)...the term 'sintered' is incorrect and should not be used in reference to a coins surface. It originated, mistakenly, since it was thought to refer to color - it does not. Cheers, RickO

Nice Jeffy. This is my Jeffy, similar to your's. Mine's a 1959. For being 60 YR.s old, most steps are still there, as your's also.

Id totally agree here. I have several folders I have attempted to assemble and the 58P is always a hard one to find!
