I just ran across this slab and was quite interested in any background on it. It was called a sample slab but is it one? Anyone seen these before?

I like how the reverse says "© PCGS-COPYING PROHIBITED".

    They were produced for a coin collectors kit.

    Several thousand are floating around.

    That is nice, and although many would put it in an album, for that year, I would like a slab...Mom's birth year...Cheers, RickO

    Slabs like those are fairly common as a whole, though there are a few rarer dates.

    You're right...and there may be more than several thousand.
    They are very common.
    I once bought a large box of them for $1 each.
    This was a few years ago.
    Every once in a while one will sell on eBay for, pardon the expression, "stupid money."

    Per samplecoinslabs.com, these were issued to promote a Random House coin collecting kit.
    The website estimates production at 50,000-100,000.
