ilkemonsters - that wasn't a 58-D. The 1961 and 1962 sell for much less.

Kind of "meh" coin, IMO. What would make it worth so much to a buyer? Were there very few people in attendance at that luncheon? I like this one much better.
A pleasant surprise in an eBay auction is quite rare these days.

It would be great if PCGS assigned Samples a no-grade grade and then issued these with real coin and numbers. Then they could have a Registry Set for these!

I think it's great to collect Sample Slabs. I have a few but it hasn't turned into a full blown obsession yet

Chinese counerfeits, doctoring, and yes even gradeflation are issues that can be identified for those that choose to pay attention and understand numismatics for what it is and especially for what it should be. If you should choose to be a numismatist than buy into the concept of educating yourself and taking responsibility for your perspective and decisions as to what you choose to buy and collect. The choice is yours to buy what on a global scale can be considered great or crap that is merely the flavor of the month.
While collectors complain about prices and the downward trend that seems to be impacting several coin series at various grades, take a moment to ask why this is happening. Is it truly because the hobby is controlled by so-called manufactured rarity that exists in some slab that is the subject of this thread or should it really include something more that has artistic merit or just something that matters.
While we should collect what we like and enjoy, please take the time to explore what is available and what is truly amazing and affordable in comparison to the slab that is the subject of this thread.
