My uncle flew as a tail gunner on a B-24 in the 8th in the last bombing mission over Germany in WWII. I once asked if he saw any German jets. He said "1", it was here and it was gone. He said it was a good thing they were used earlier in the war

My uncle Robert Raymond Foley Jr. died in Vietnam on 11-11-68. Veterans Day is always a heavy day for us... He was one of my dads older brothers. He was 18 yrs old when he volunteered to join the Navy and go fight in Vietnam. He spent his time in Vietnam in a small river boat patrolling the Danang river. He would send letters and pics when he could. He never complained about the conditions or his mission in any of his letters home. Below is my favorite picture of him with a note he jotted down on the reverse. He died with just 11 days left before he was supposed to come back home after a 1 year tour. We were told his boat went out one night to help out a few marines who were pinned down in the jungle and needed some help. Bobby’s crew decided they would go out and try to pick them up. It is unclear whether his boat hit a mine or if there boat exploded from some other enemy explosive device. All 5 people on board were killed instantly. They found his body within 24 hours . Within 48 hours the rest Of the crew were all found and recovered. It was a very tough time for my grandparents and the entire family. In his last letter home (which my grandparents received after they were notified of his death) the very last line he wrote only 14 more days left in this hell hole.... It was the first time he had ever mentioned anything close to a complaint... It tore my grandparents up receiving the letter a week after they learned he had died. But I guess mail back then took a while... He is the main reason I picked the Navy when I got out of high school. He was the first one from the small town to die in Vietnam. If you ever pass through Southborough MA there is a small bridge named after him. Whenever I go back east I always enjoy taking my wife and kids to visit his grave and the kids get a kick seeing his name on the bridge. He will never be forgotten.
Thank you to all our Veterans who served and sacrificed for our country, including my Dad, who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to serve our country for almost 30 years.

My uncle was also a tail gunner/radio operator in a B-24. He flew out of North Africa and later Italy. I have a copy of the diary he kept.

Route 85... It may be called Marlborough road or Framingham road but we call it Route 85. I live in CA so I’m not super familiar with all the roads now but I have an uncle who still owns and lives in the family home in town. He drives over it daily to get to work .... One time he told me he was running late and was speeding to try to get to his shop to open up and hiding on the end of the bridge was a cop.... The cop pulled my uncle over and asked for his license... My uncle handed him his license and apologized for Speeding. The cop looked at the license (recognized the Foley last name ) and looked at the bridge and then turned to my uncle and asked if he was related to Robert Foley jr. My uncle replied...Yes he was my older brother. The cop handed him back his license and looked him in the eye and said you can speed over this bridge anytime you need to...

Thanks to all who have served.
Thank you to all of the brave men and women who have served! I work for a company that makes special boat parts for the Navy, and I’m honored to be able to support our servicemen and women.
Hard to believe that I am no longer in. Was part of my life for 24 years and I never seem to be amazed how much the Navy is still ingrained.
Service is ironic as I believe in my heart that I received more than I gave. All that being said, retirement day was a great day. Time to serve in other ways, and make room for the young guns to have some fun wearing choker whites.
If any of you younger generation is debating joining and wants to ask some questions, shoot me a PM. I'll give you the good, bad and everything in between.

Like Charmy's dad, my dad was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Mint offered a medal to survivors or their families, who were required to send the necessary documentation to prove that they (or their family member) was at Pearl Harbor. My dad passed away in 1972, but I saw an article in Coin World that the medal was being offered. My mom still had my dad's service record, filled out the application for the medal, and mailed it. The medal was not available to collectors or the general public, unless they were, or were related to a survivor. There was a limit of one medal per veteran, so there probably not a lot of these around.
interestingly, my mom lived in the Washington, DC area, and was a high school student. A classmate contacted her congressman, and they were given passes for the Senate chamber for December 8, when FDR asked for a declaration of war following " a day that will live in infamy".
From left to right: my Great Uncle Tony, KIA at Peleliu in September 1944; my Grandfather Ed, Purple Heart in Korean War; my Dad, served 1974-82. I'm a Marine baby, born at Camp Pendleton.
I recently found my Great Uncle Tony's registration card:

My father in law was one of thirteen brothers who served. Can you imagine? His parents had fourteen boys in a row (one died in infancy) before finally having a girl and deciding that was enough. All thirteen boys served, all made it back alive--including a bomber pilot and a machine gunner on Iwo Jima.

For my Father and my Uncle-WW2. Another Uncle- Korea. 3 cousins-Viet Nam. You and all other branches of the service are honored on this most hallowed day.
My Dad will be laid to rest tomorrow from Great Lake National Cemetery with full military honors. I received his flag at a mass on Friday.
This Veterans Day will always have a significant meaning
My Dad in Germany on the right. Big Ed. There maybe men as good as my Dad but not a better man.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Justacommeman, I'm so sorry for your loss, I know how hard this must be for you. You have a lot to be proud of. My heart and prayers are with you and your family.
