What I spent in Hawaii

I just got back from a trip to Hawaii, or more specifically the islands of Oahu and the Big Island.
It was great to finally meet @Paradisefound . (Just kidding).
I went to our 50th state bearing a few humble numismatic gifts for those who might take notice of their pocket change.
I used a WWII era navy punch to add this counterstamp to some 1941S nickels, dateless buffalo nickels, and Hawaii state quarters (all have my initials on the other side to identify them as modern counterstamps). All of these coins were taken with me to the USS Arizona Memorial as well as the other historic sites and vessels in the Pearl Harbor area.
I also brought a few "vanity" coins to mark my visit. The nickels were spent anywhere and everywhere I could manage to get them into circulation.
The Churchill crowns were left behind at a few spots in Pearl Harbor and on some beaches on the two islands I visited. By design, some might be found in the coming weeks (if not already) and some might be found decades or hundreds of years from now (if ever).
I also seeded several beaches with a memorial to Donn Beach, better known by his nickname Don the Beachcomber. He brought tiki style decor to the mainland in the 1930s and invented and/or popularized drinks such as the Mai Tai and Polynesian cuisine in America. He had a restaurant called Don The Beachcomber, first in California in the 1930s and then in over a dozen other locations across the mainland US.
After serving in WWII he relocated to the territory of Hawaii and opened a couple restaurants there. I visited his gravesite in Honolulu at the National Cemetery which is located in the Punchbowl, a large volcanic crater. I left one of these on his headstone. (I also visited the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye as well.).
I also brought a few dozen WWII era cents to run through the elongating machines I expected to find there. Most of them had first been counterstamped with the navy punch.
And by total coincidence, these showed up in many of the places I went.
Aloha and mahalo.

I have a couple of the US Anchor coins..... Being former Navy, they are special to me....Cheers, RickO
Very cool!
Are you just kidding that it was great to meet @Paradisefound, or just kidding that you met her?
I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that.
You should use this one as your avatar.
Good idea! I think I will!
Sweet! I like it!
I am glad you marked them with your initials. Maybe someone will find one, do an internet search, and then find this thread. That would be cool, especially if it was many years form now.

Litterbug!
Seriously that was really a nice gesture leaving all those coins for future Beachcombers to find.
Here it is with the forum background color if you'd rather.

Thx! I'll have to save it down when I am on another PC...
Who knows, maybe you'll be some future edition of Brunk or Rulau. Probably listed in the "Mavericks" section
Cool vacation!
I love it! You have inspired me to do something similar. I've watched many a detectorist comb the beaches on the islands. I think I'd go one step further with a special gmail address to see who makes the find.
I once worked for a state agency that received a fair amount of change. Local banks WOULD NOT accept foreign coins (HONEST!) so I used them to salt area public beaches for kids to find.
And I know meeting @Paradisefound was BS since she is just an amazing urban legend!
.
You've been a busy guy! What a cool idea!
I knew it would happen.
Great idea and very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Might have to try this on my future vacation to the islands!
You're the "coin fairy"!
Cool. I'll be searching.
Glad you enjoyed and have a wonderful HI getaway

And here is another picture of the incredible landscape on Hawaii (Akaka Falls on the Big Island).
And there just might be a JBK Churchill crown at the bottom of the ravine, but I don't recommend looking for it.
Found while metal detecting on October 6 in ankle deep water fronting lifeguard tower 1E at Ala Moana Beach.

@KENNEBILL Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for posting! That is just way to cool!
@KENNEBILL That is way cool finding that piece that was recently seeded in the area.

Welcome to the forum and very nice find @KENNEBILL!
@JBK look what @KENNEBILL found! What was that reward? $1,000,000 counter-stamped Monopoly notes?

That's fantastic! Thanks for posting it.
Out of curiosity, when do you metal detect? Early in the morning before the crowds arrive or late in the day when they've gone home (but I am not sure the beach is ever clear of people)?
Yours was the first one I put in the sand in Hawaii, placed in an inch or two of water. It is one of 10 made: I kept two and left eight behind in on beaches on Oahu and the Big Island. If you don't know who Don the Beachcomber was it is a good excuse to learn about him.
Here it is on the day it was given to the beach, sitting in an inch or two of clear water:
@KENNEBILL...Welcome aboard....You should also join the metal detecting forum....Cheers, RickO
Sure, make me look cheap. I am saving my millions for a 1913 Liberty V nickel.
But I'd give $10 plus postage to the finder of this first coin.
Cool story with it being found so quickly!

Thanks for the forum welcome everyone! I metal detect in the morning and typically hunt in the water for 5 or more hours depending on conditions. My initial thoughts on the token were that it was seeded by another metal detector user named Don since metal detecting could be described as beachcombing, an internet search led me to this site and thread adding some fun in finding the token.
